I Think I Have Crabs!!!

This may just be the stupidest post ever but bear with me. I have got either crabs or bedbugs and they're driving me crazy. There are basically, and forgive me for being so crude, tiny little insect like creatures in my pubic region causing itching. The last time I had sex was with a girl I see often and just over a week ago. I understand you cant judge by appearances but I really don't think she gave me crabs although I know anything is possible.
I have also just moved into new diggs. Is it possible that these are bedgugs as I know the mattress was not new too me although I did hoover and flip it before dressing it. Any advice would be appreciated to solve this problem.
Also is crabs something to go to the doctor about these days or would a pharmacist be able to give me some ointments/shampoos? I really dont relish the thought of visiting my family GP.

If you think you have crabs or bedbugs then you should go to your GP for a proper diagnosis so you can get the appropriate medication - and you know how best to deal with any in your home/clothes.

Get yourself to your doctor first of all, go to a different doctor than your family GP if it makes you feel more comfortable but that's their job, your pubic hair isn't going to make them bat an eyelid. Boil wash then tumble dry on a hot setting all your bedsheets and clothes too.

Thanks for the reply mate. Who gets crabs these days? Its not the 70s and im not 18 anymore. Can they spread to other areas, such as chest hair or the hair on my head. I'm really itching all over even thinking about them but this may be just all in my head.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,485 ✭✭✭✭Ickle Magoo

I don't know very much about them but as far as I know, yes, they can attach to other hairy areas. You really have to get a doctor to check that's what you have though - itching can be caused by a million and one things. There is no point treating pubic lice unless you know that is what you have.

They live on hair don't they? Shaving the lot off down there may help - mention it to the doctor, (s)he may not suggest it.

    Hi OP,

Scary thing to have happen, i would be freaked out too! you could google both crab and bed bugs to see which one you think you have, the image will come up.... go to the Doc tomorrow then.... eeeeek best of luck, it could well be from the bed because i know people who have them have to be very careful as they can spread and you need to wash and fumigate everything.

Go to your dr, they can also burrow into your skin.
Go to the dr and boil wash all the clothes in your room, your bed room and see if you can borrow or rent a steamer to do the mattress and curtains pillows in the room.

Hard luck buddy. You've got crabs. Bedbugs don't hang about in your pubes.
First of all - stop worrying.
    Then:
Go to the pharmacy and tell them you want something for crab lice. They will not judge you.
They will recommend a shampoo solution and a comb.
Instructions will be on the bottle.
    Follow instructions!
Wash all your clothes at high temperature.
Hoover the bejaysus out of your room and mattress and buy a mattress cover to be sure. You say it's only been a week so the infestation will not be that severe.
    Breath a sigh of relief.
    Stay away from that girl.

    All the best.

I second Major Lovechild's post. Also tell your gf because she could have them too if she's slept at your place or you've slept together since you moved in to the new house. And it could well be the new house (mattress) where you got them, rather than from her.

Hmmm! It's highly unlikely but the important thing is to get to the chemist now!

Just back from a doctor and my confidence in the Irish health system is truly rattled. Firstly to avoid embarrassment I went to a doctor I didnt know. To my surprise he was a gentleman at the very least in his 70s. I didnt know whether to go through with it or not but I was there so I bit the bullet.
I explained the syptoms and he examined me (without gloves!) and didn't even check the area with a magnifier to see the lice that are clearly visible to the naked eye. He told me I had excema. I protested and explained that Id noticed little insect-like creature in the area and he gave out to me. He said and I quote "I've only ever seen two cases of public lice. Both in Dublin years ago and both people who messed around. I got them out of my office as soon as I could. You have exema."
He wrote me a prescription for some cream to be used once a day, charged me 50 quid and marched me out the door. Now to add to my embarrassment which is huge already I feel ashamed for "messing around".

Call the office and demand a second opinion free of charge from another doctor. He didn't do a proper exam and his experience of the frequency of pubic lice in the greater dublin area is irrelevant to your personal diagnosis.

I don't think his age is the issue, just his poor manner if he didn't examine you properly. There is a sticky if STI clinics on this forum, that's a better place to start.

    Hey dude,

I wouldn't bother getting an STI test for crabs.. A GP should be able to physically see them, but if the girl had that..... Maybe it'd be a good idea just in case!

I've had crabs. Itchy, but seriously no big deal. Caught it when away. I shaved off all my pubic hair. They stick to the bottom of the hair near the skin. If you shave everything, they've nothing to cling on to or leave their eggs. If you're that embarrassed I'd do that. I do know that they can move around to your arrrshe so maybe go to Doc about it just in case. The shampoo is nice - smells lovely! And once you're done you'll have all nice clean clothes/ carpets and feel fantastic!

I've heard that if you soak your pubes in coke or fanta will sort the crabs out.
It wont kill them, but it will rot their teeth.

    I'm in for it now...:o

Yes my wife got them from a mattress in a bed n breakfast when she was away on a hens night.
I in turn got them from her and what we did was we both shaved ourselves completely (including my chest hair), problem solved.

Following my nightmare with the doctor yesterday i bit the bullet and went to a chemist and asked a very friendly and helpful gentleman for his advice. I described the symptoms and he confirmed what I already knew. I have crabs. He suggested Lyclear cream and explained how to use it.
I got home and trimmed down there leaving almost no hair, applied the cream and will wash it off tomorrow. I've binned my bed clothes and washed any clothes I've worn in the last fortnight at a boiling setting. Not being explicit just maybe of some help to someone. Hopefully thats me sorted and apart from a massively embarrasing experience I've learned a lesson. Stay away from college girls!

Good for you, so, are you going to report that doctor?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 492 ✭✭Major Lovechild

    Good man yourself.

You have to nip these things in the bud as soon as possible. (Excuse the pun)

Also: Let's have a big hand for moderator Htaedydal who has now, it seems, taken the position of editor on Boards as well. Not being content with telling us what we should write she now tells us how. (maybe she would have preferred a different colour?)

Just a few tips though Htaedydal:It is not called "Shouty text". It's called bold and it's use in this instance was to emphasize urgency. I'm sure you can appreciate that.

All sorted now and thanks everyone for your advice. I've decided not to report the doctor as he's an old guy, is the sole doctor in the practice and who would i even complain to. I don't really relish the thought of ringing him up and saying "Hah, guess what, I had crabs after all so take that...." I'm just back to normal and doing my best to forget the whole horrible event.
One bit of advice incase it happens to anyone else. Get treated immediately as I believe it can become a very nasty problem if left.

    Hi OP,

Just wanted to say well done for getting it treated and for sharing your problem, i have never had crabs but i am glad to be educated about them, like I never knew you could get them from a bed, like a B&B or the like. I know these things can be funny to discuss but i actually thought is was very interesting to know how best to handle it!! How good is boards for discrete questions being answered when you need it!!
