    Hi,

I discovered today that someone is accessing my network. I have their IP address and their MAC address. I suspect a neighbours son whose name just happens to be the name that appears on my network.....

Now I have spoken with my ISP and explained the situation and they have recommended that I report this to the Gardai.

Although, I am not very technically savvy (only had a WEP key on my router...now I know), reporting to the Gardai seems a bit heavy handed, and would no doubt lead to my falling out with my neighbour, which is something I would prefer not to do.

Question is.....do i need to report this i.e. am I liable for anything they made have done by using my modem.

    Any help would be great.

Most people, myself included only have a wep key on their router, so dont feel stupid. If you dont want him to access your network and you dont want to report him to the gardai I'd recommend setting up mac address filtering on your router.

This means that only IP address that you put into to router can access your network. If you google it, you should find some guides on how to do it. It just means if you have any games consoles, laptops etc. you will need to find their IP address and enter them into your router.

This should solve your issue :)

You had Wep as security, it takes 1 min for someone to google how to crack it and 30 seconds to crack it. Just change to Wpa with a secure password and consider it a lesson learned. They've just used Your bandwidth, they'd not have access to Your pc, not unless Your password is easily guessable.

What Isp, Eircom by any chance?

    1. Rename SSID to Trojan Virus
    2. Tell neighbour someone took over your router and is infecting any pc that connects to it with the ID10T virus that disconnects the internet and steals your entire bank account.
    3. Next time he is connected keep turning on and off the router.
    4. giggle

Oh and to confirm what pog said post your SSID and i reckon someone here will post back your key in seconds, SSID would be something like EIRCOM05050 02002

    Appreciate the replies.

If it is only bandwidth they've accessed.....then why is ISP recommending that I should report it to Gardai.

And you also don't know for sure what they've been doing with ur connection...all of which you could be liable for!!!

Yeah exactly what I was thinking. If he was using your IP to download copyrighted material or distribute child porn then a trace will lead back to your router and hence you !!

As suggested above just change your security to WPA/WPA2 and create a decent password and you'll be protected from all but the most determined of hackers.

    Good luck !!

WEP security is very easy to hack :) change it to WPA or even better to WPA2 and all your problems will finish :) ..as ZENER said
