Meself and herself are moving to Dublin in the next month. Im doing a masters in Maynooth, starting in Jan, and she will be working in Citywest Business Campus..

We are looking for a gaf and we would like to live in the South city. We have been looking around Rathmines, Kimmage, Ranelagh, Harolds Cross and Rathgar type of area. We know that these arent the closest to where we are working etc, but we have friends around this area and we both have cars so we dont mind a reasonable commute (and public transport is an option for us if it will be faster/less stressful than driving for either of us)

We'd like to get peoples advice.. is there anyone in a similar situation? What would people recommend? Appreciate any advice..
    Cheers

Live where it gives you the least transport headaches, taking into account commuting, friends / family, shopping, nights out, etc.

I would normally advise you to live in either Citywest or Maynooth, but if you want to see your friends several times a week, then I would suggest somewhere like Kilmainham where there is the option of getting the bus sometimes.

Luas A1 to Citywest isn't expected to open before the summer.

There's shag all parking around Nuim, if you're driving out there. Depending on your masters the campus in Nuim is between 6 and 12 mins from the train station.

Dublin 6 heaven sounds good to me too :) In descending order, I would pick those fine 'burbs in this order, assuming that I had the bottomless pockets necessary: Ranelagh, Rathgar, Rathmines, Harold's Cross, Kimmage.

Public transport wise, Ranelagh is by far the best bet with Luas, hands down.

Getting to Maynooth and Citywest though may be slightly tougher. Public transport wise, getting to Maynooth would involve travelling Pearse/Connolly to Maynooth by train. Taking the infamous 66 bus is purely for masochists as it gets snarled up in Chapelizod and Lucan, especially when the schools are in action.

Dublin Bus's route 65B goes through Rathmines to Citywest though I have no idea how long it takes. The Luas extension to the Red Line serving Citywest will open next summer.

Driving wise, getting to the N4 could be slow in the mornings but once you are on it heading out of town shouldn't be too bad. No idea of timings though, and likewise the N7 towards Citywest.

You should consider the IFSC and docklands area. It's not far from town, and between the Luas and train computing would ne a piece of cake.

Have you considered somewhere like Lucan?
Then you could get the 66 bus to Maynooth and it would only take about 15mins.
Also, the citywest business campus is only about 15mins drive.

If the two of you have cars anyway, it's not that long a drive to visit your friends.

The bus only takes about 25mins to get from Lucan into the city centre in the evenings if you're going out for a few drinks.

I'd agree that Lucan is probably your best bet - all the buses from Dublin to Maynooth go by or through there, and it's an easy journey to Citywest along the outer ring road. You also have a frequent bus service into town, which is reasonably quick off peak, and a Nitelink home if you ever need it.

Other good options might be living walking distance from the train stations in Castleknock or Coolmine, for access to Maynooth, and also close to the M50 to get to Citywest.

In the south city, Templeogue, Rathfarnham and Dundrum have reasonable access to the M50, and are close to where you'd like to live.

Perfect advice really. Easy access to both workplaces with public transport (OP: commuting by car in Dublin is horrible and if you can at all avoid it, then do!). Docklands would also allow good access to the likes of Ranelagh for visiting friends. If you're determined to drive then live half way between Maynooth and Citywest (Newcastle perhaps).

Actually, parking in D6 or the city centre could be hugely problematic, especially with two cars.

True it could be, but wouldn't most apartment blocks in the Docklands be of the type with an underground car park attached? I'm not familiar with it in the CC but in the 'burbs it's usually one space per bedroom.

But in the city centre, transport would be good enough to not bring one of the cars with them.

Also, Ranelagh = Diep, The Breakfast Club and Kinara Kitchen. :D

South Lucan = The Penny Hill

Citywest itself and or Rathcoole ? i am confused and am hearing conflicting reports as to who has the best schoold / Brioadband and facilities -0 any advice rfom someone who has moved in the last year would be really appreciated - thanks Amy

Santry is nowhere near Citywest. Templeogue or Knocklyon are nice parts of the city, and you'd be travelling out of town to work so traffic wouldn't be as bad. Plenty of schools and amenities there too.

you might have issues getting a school place at this stage so your best bet is to call any school that you are interested in and see if there will be space.
Maynooth and KIlcock are worth looknig at if working in citywest and want to live out of the city.

Either would absolutely mean having a car (or a bike and be very fit!) to get to work.
