"Lost At Sea" continues......

Yet more in one of the more grubby on-going scandals associated with our current Government
The Oireachtas Agriculture Committee has voted to reject the findings of the Ombudsman investigation into the controversial Lost at Sea scheme.
Ombudsman and Information Commissioner Emily O'Reilly had recommended that the Byrne family from Donegal receive just over €245,000 in compensation because the way the Lost at Sea scheme was designed and advertised was 'contrary to fair and sound administration'.
    http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/1014/lostatsea.html

This is the scheme introduced by TD Frank Fahey. 75% of the money went to two his constituents, who he'd consulted before its introduction, told they'd been approved before applications had closed, and told one of them the rules had been changed to get them awarded.

    This is f**king unreal http://news.ie.msn.com/article.aspx?cp-documentid=155053413

Her report, published in December 2009 and given to the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, was voted down by nine Government aligned members of the committee. Seven Opposition members voted in favour of it.
It is only the second time in the 26-year history of the Ombudsman’s office a ruling has been ignored by the Government.
“I am very disappointed for the Byrne family. I have exhausted all the avenues open to me in my efforts to get their complaint satisfactorily resolved,” Ms O’Reilly said.
“I remain convinced as to the merits of the case and that the family deserved to be compensated as a result of the adverse affect they suffered from actions which, in my view, amounted to maladministration.
“Ultimately, the Ombudsman model in Ireland allows the Houses of the Oireachtas to be the final arbiter where a public body rejects an Ombudsman recommendation.”
Ms O’Reilly also questioned remarks made by the committee regarding her report. She noted the committee urged some of her report be disregarded because of “its particular facts”.
The Ombudsman said that may be a reference to the fact that the actions of former Fianna Fáil minister Frank Fahey, who brought in the scheme, were scrutinised and criticised in the report.

    Whats new

Its one of the most blatant pieces of ignorant gombeenism I've come across....truly remarkable, not just for the actions of the instigator, but the way he was rallied around as if he was a lamb being protected from wolves....

Now of course what they could have done, had there been a shred of decency between them, is just cough, splutter and give the family the money, either publically or privately, but no, not a bit of it.

Surely in the interest of justice an Oireachtas committee dealing with complaints made against the government shouldn't have a majority of pro-government members. Another example of how our country's legal system is engineered to protect those in government at the cost of citizen's rights.

Forty roofs strikes again. Is he still drawing down the teacher's pension?

I've been keeping an eye on the US elections to come in early November.

One of the common things you see is people digging into one another on voting records.

If I were running up against any of the eight government members of that committee I'd be using this as a chain round their necks.

And if I were one of the seven opposition politicians, I'd hang it round the neck of any FF contender coming into the race.

I actually think we should let the reigns off in Irish politics a little bit more. Insist on candidate debates where the boys can be nailed on issues like these in public.

No matter if they squirm, turn or retreat, people will know.

Somehow it wouldn't matter to some entrenched voters.
Shure he would be lauded as getting one over the system and doing well for some of his consitutuents.

The only way to get to some people is hurt them in their own pockets.
Tell them there will be no new schools in constituency, because one of THEIR TDs blew a few million on his supporters.
Remind them local hospital is loosing beds becuase of millions wasted by one of their TDs.

Anyway glad to see someone has resurrected thread on this.

I am not allowed discuss …

Even worse, he's collecting the pay difference between what a permanent and a temporary teacher earns, while denying some young teacher (who knows how many down the years) a permanent position.

The Lost at Sea scheme was just used as a slush fund for Fahey and his mates

Just look at the membership of the Agriculture Committee
    http://www.oireachtas.ie/viewdoc.asp?fn=/documents/Committees30thDail/J-AgricultureFisheriesFood/Membership/Joint.htm

    They include
Ned O'Keefe - need I say any more
Thomas McEllistrim - obscure inheritor of the family seat
Eamon Scanlon - one of the "two strays from Sligo", now busting a gut to be readmitted to the Parliamentary Party.
Senator Francis O'Brien - business partner of "Fingers", both being pursued for repayment of loans by the Ulster Bank.
    and so on.

Seen this on another board so, I thought I'd write to the FF TDs' and request the reason the voted down the report. Haven't got a reply yet. Anyone else want to try?

Ned O'Keefe has replied to me. I hope to hear more from him soon. Will keep you posted. I thought it good of him to do so:)

What is his excuse for voting against a report obviously in the
    National Interest?...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 73 ✭✭Benito

I haven't got his reason yet. The anticipation is killing me! Still he is the only one to reply in any form. If we don't get a reply soon, maybe we should just close the thread, eh?

This is Fianna Failure we are talking about. They don't work for the national interest, they just convince enough people who don't pay attention that they do. :(

Benito, it is not a stupid old thread.

It is a very important matter where one dodgy unethical piece of sh** who happens to have been promoted to be a minister of this state by some other very dodgy unethical pieces of sh**, decided to hijack a very worthwhile fund to benefit two constituents of the minister to the detriment of other very valid applicants.

It shows ff cronyism at it's worst and ffers would like threads like these to die away.

It was similar with discussion on wee willie and his lying slandering habits.
They were glossed over by lots of the media and only with places like politics.ie and senators like Eugene Regan was the matter kept in the public sphere.

Wow, it was that far back in December. Forgive me. There is nothing new to reply with other than I am the recipient of spam now from Cowen. Guess I am on Mount street mailing list. If anyone is still checking this thread, my apology is over due. I had a lovely Christmas away from Dublin without interwebthingy. Didn'd miss the interwebthingy while I was away. Yes, this is an important issue. It's been overtaken by more recent events. I don't think this will be resumed and, this is the awful thing. It is now ancient history. Like so many other important issues. Sorry again.

Who cares? The public when they hear about such goings on - and to try and shove such instances or examples aside, is an example of possible reason why such things are still going on and allowed to, under the gaze of the publics radar!

In reality this latest mentioned episode is just another questionable event amid many that can be found listed on the net concerning Fianna Fail.
A few of which I have listed myself at times - and still exist.

...And of course, only those that don't want to see an org's name tarnished, might wish to have such matters quickly shoved aside too by some reason that they can try justify!
    ...But thats just my opinion...

Ok, you are quoting not from my last post. I share your anger but, this thread had a hope of those committee members responding to a request. It's not going to happen now and the 'Lost at Sea' issue is not going to be a national issue in the comming weeks. Maybe if I/we? send mails to all the committee members and try and keep this issue alive?

I need to take my dog for a walk, really! I will look at the committee members again and request some response. Will be online late, ok?

These findings should be shoved down the throat of that corrupt piece of garbage Fahy by every person in the Galway area.

If there is any justice in the world the prick will be out on his ear come the results of the election.

We should all ask each candidate at the doors about this report, why was it rejected ( Fahey implicated ) and what they indeed to do about it if elected to government.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,988 ✭✭✭✭kippy

    Sure whats the fcuking point?
The ombudsman finds wrongdoing has occured, an Oireachtas Committee has backed up that assertation - what happens next? Not a fcuking thing.
    Absolutely pointless.
Toothless and powerless ombudsman, with a tootless and powerless oireachtas committee.
What is the point of having either? Yep, sure we'll investigate (at expense to the taxpayer) get back with some reports (at more expense to the taxpayer) and in the long run nothing actually happens. No one gets reprimanded, no money is recovered for the tax payers and these people get to continue in their daily lives.......

I agree with the last poster, anyone coming knocking to your door, ask them what they intend to do to improve our record on "white collar crime", cronyism and the consistent and seemingly unstoppable, weekly reports about our elected representatives and their thin moral values.

This report about one of our politicians, like all the other reports about various elected representatives over the past year or two will be forgotten about over time.

I replied to a poster, ages ago it seems and, he took me to task about the importance of this issue. He was correct but, as we are in 'election' mode and many of the FF committee members have resigned from politics, this is now a very minor issue. It is not. As I now am in recipt of so much ff spam as a result of my queries (spell right?) How do we keep this issue alive into the next Government?

Beniot I might be the poster who you claim took you task about the importance of the issue.
If that is what you thought I am sorry, I was trying to reinforce your efforts to highlight the issue and to seek further information.

In a normal funcitoning democracy this issue would have meant the end of the political career of a politican and possibly even jail time for corrupting a state fund.
Here of course he will get a slap in the back for looking after his constituents.

ffers would like us to forget about these little matters, but if we do and we say nothing we are giving the f***ers exactly what they want.
