Garage has Fitted "Too Cold " Thermostat...Any Harm?

Have just got a diesel Micra back from a timing belt and water pump change ...it seems very obvious that they have fitted a 'colder' thermostat as the blue light that goes out when the engine is warmed up is taking twice as long or more to go out ...Now from what I know this MIGHT lead to extra fuel consumption and a quick google suggests condensation and acid in oil due to colder running but is this realistically something I should bother about and ask to get changed or is it not a 'real world' problem?Im not too impressed that they seem to have broken a headlamp bulb and put the fan belt back on 'squealing' (slightly)...oh and they didnt bother top up the reservoir after the water pump change ...

I wonder did they lose the thermostat?:D

It will take ages to warm up so you will have cold air in the mornings(great for winter:rolleyes:), fuel consumption will be also effect for a while until she warms up.

Probably no stat in it now.

How long is the car gone? In the last 3 weeks my car takes much longer to warm up, you'd be surprised the difference a few degrees would make

Not really, you can get thermostats for some cars that have the opening point at a lower temp than the standard ones :)

If there was no stat in it now your gauge will drop while crusing on the motorway.

Funnily enough, people over on the 75 and ZT forum are toying with hotter thermostats to improve the diesel engine's efficiency. They've been exchanging emails with some head of engine design in BMW who's email address that they got, and he thought the idea had merit!

But I'm with you, I doubt they put in a colder thermostat in the Micra, it's just chilly as anything outside at the moment.

A chap was recently telling me the fan rarely comes on in his diesel 75 so there may well be scope for an extra degree or two without detriment.

Point taken. I'm well aware of such modifications. My response is in the context of the OPs Micra. I doubt such a modified stat is a possibility on a standard Micra.

I saw something similar too but it was some massive ford f- something or other. The theory is that diesels work better when they are worked and therefore hot. Driven gently will result in them being cold and thirstier. Stick in a hotter stat and you get a more efficient engine when driven easy and you can still work it hard. I asked about one for my car but was advised against it for some reason. I mean if the car gets hot when worked hard and doesen't kill it then getting hot should be ok.

Agreed on the cold weather though, and it's only the start!

Yes. But it shouldn't affect how qick is the engine warmed up because hotter or colder thermostat, the stat will stay closed untill certain temperature is reached. It's getting cold outside as well. As mentioned before, your temperature gauge will drop on motorways and will go up in traffic if the stat is removed
