I suppose it depends on where you live. I go to Aofáine *Walsh* (not sure on the surname, everyone knows her by her first name anyways) on Sea Road. Most people I know go to her. Apart from team physio's, she's the only physio I've ever been treated by and I'd like to keep it that way. She's very clear and lets you know exactly what she's doing.

I highly, highly recommend you go see Derek King - he's on the Coast Road very close to Oranmore : PM for number

I'd recommend both Aofaine Walshe and Derek King. I've been to both of them and they know their stuff.

They are different though in that Aofaine is a physio and Derek is a physical therapist. I hope you know the difference

You don't need physio, you just need to do a course of rehab. PM me if you want more details

That's a mightily impressive ESP based diagnostic system you have there! Still think I'd prefer chartered physiotherapist, myself.

OP, I highly recommend Galway City Physio in Liosbán. My only connection with them is that I'm a satisfied customer.

Derek King is excellent. Been to him a lot with injuries thanks to Martial Arts. Well worth seeing him.

Well I am qualified to rehab these injuries and since I have rehabed a couple of 100 injuries ligament related I thought I would give a decent opinion.

OP if you would feel more comfortable with a physio's opinion first then I would recommend Galway City Physio, I refer majority of my cliental to their, Roberto and Barbara are particularly excellent and quite friendly.

Trisha in Baily Point Physio in Salthill is really good, a sporty person herself.

I have a young lad with a knee injury .Basically he can run perfectly but when he kicks the ball it activates the injury .Can any of you recommend a good specialist in Galway to take him to .Got special insoles for him but did not work .He has been to two different physiotherapists and both made different diagnosis .Neither cured the injury.
    Thanks Guys.

Try another one, or tell them both that the other gave you a different diagnosis and see what they say.

I'd advise you to get an MRI scan done if you can, knee injuries are nearly impossible to diagnose without a scan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭dilallio

Hi Jack - I know 4 lads and one girl who have had cruciate / medial ligament ops, and all went to James O'Toole who has a great reputation with knee injuries.
I've never been to him myself but all 5 were able to continue playing afterwards.

+1 to Liverpoollad's advise about getting a scan - ask your GP to refer your son for one.

Myself and the missus both have been to Galway city Physio and both are not100% happy. I've moved to bailey point (even though it's oposite side of the city to me)
I found trisha explained herself perfectly and got me through a marathon where others didn't seem to understand what was going on.
The brother recommends Robert crean (physical therapist) in oranmore. Not too far from you

Thanks Guys.An MRI scan sounds the way to go.

I had an ACL reconstruction last year, got the surgery in the GAlway CLinic with Padraig MUrray and can't recommend him enough. Very experienced and sees a lot of sports injuries, great setup there too.

Also you'll need a referral from a consultant to get the MRI, it's a bit of a joke really but AFAIK a GP can't refer you for one

Well if you weren't 100% happy I'll probably go with one of the other suggestions.Aofaine Walshe and Derek King people seem to be suggesting,on that note does anyone know what each session/consultation costs?

My GP has referred me for an MRI back scan before, but I think it might be better if the consultant specified the type of scan (there are different settings that will affect the imaging mode).

Don't go near the Galway clinic or you will end up spending €1000 in there...and they only take cash upfront with payment terms = now.

If you have health insurance for him the MRI in the "Imaging Centre" in Merlin Park is covered by most insurers...but check with the insurer before you go...sports injuries are not covered in some cases but falling off the trampoline is :)

If not you can haggle with the Imaging Centre and the MRI machine operators in the Bon Secours for a deal , should get it for €300 cash if you really haggle and are prepared for a bit of a wait as they do priority ( higher paying) jobs.

They will both give you a copy on DVD to take to a specialist who will do nothing till they see an MRI anyway.

    Paid €300 there 18 months ago. Non-negotiable.

I'll second Padraic Murray in the Clinic.
Have had 3 ops on my knee and he did them all.
Not his fault I had to have 3 as they were all different injurys, but he sorted each of them.
You will probably need an MRI as it is near impossible to diagnose a knee injury as there is a lot going on in there. (not a medical opinion just 2 cents worth!!!!!)

Padraic Murray is very good and he knows about sports injurys.

You will be quoted a lot more than €300 by some of the MRI merchants in Galway. Ring around for quotes and ensure that this includes burning the scan on DVD to take away with you.

Then get a consultant to look into the situation and make sure to bring the scan with you on DVD. Spending €150 on a consultant visit with no scan to go on is pointless.

Here's resurrecting an old thread but relevant to me at the mo. I have a cruciate+medial ligament and meniscus damage. I'm looking for a second opinion on how to proceed as I'm not entirely happy with current plan (which is wait and see) my doc has mentioned Padraic Murray in the Galway clinic and I hope to arrange a consultation with him. I have an MRI but don't have insurance. How much is a consultation likely to cost? And surgery€€€, should I go down this road?
