    A friend has a Dell Insiration 1300 laptop running Win XP. The internet works fine on the enthernet cable but the wireless is not connecting. The wireless is activated, the wireless icon in the corner is telling me that that it is "Acquiring IP Address" and stays that was. I have disabled it and enabled it but it stays the same. Any idea what it might be? Thanks

    Does it connect to other wireless networks.

    Are you 100% sure that the encryption key you are using is correct.

    Try temporarily disabling the security (dont forget to turn it back on) and seeing if you can connect.

    The Wireless card may not be compatible with the security option used. Some older cards didn't support WPA.

    The card is compatiable as I had it running before, It worked up until about a month ago, The key is correct as I can connect to the wireless with my phone (wifi) useing the key. Would it be ok to reset the modem to see if that works?

    I'd try these steps first:

    Go to start->control panel(click classic view)->network connections

    Right click on wireless network connection and click 'repair'. See if the problem is fixed.

    If not, right click on wireless network connection again and this time click on properties. In that window there should be a list of items ('this connection uses the following items:')with a scroll bar. Scroll down and see if 'internet protocol (TCP/IP)' is there and make sure the box beside it is ticked (and is there only one of them?).

    If its there and there's only one and its ticked, do this:

    click start->run and type 'services.msc' and hit enter. Look through the list for 'DHCP client'. In the 'status' column beside it, see if it says 'started'.

    If its all working out so far:

    start windows explorer and right click on 'my computer', select properties. Go to the hardware tab and click on device manager. Look for 'network adapters' and expand the list. Look for the adapter that mentions wireless in the name. Right click and select 'uninstall'. Reboot your computer, the drivers will be reinstalled automatically (hopefully).

    Let us know if any of this has helped.
