Just wondering if anyone can tell me - will I void my manufacturers warranty by changing the brake discs & pads myself? Obviously my brakes would no longer be under warranty but that's no problem. Will I void my entire vehicle warranty as ridiculous as that sounds?!

Not really keen on throwing a few hundred down the tubes unless I have to!

    What is the car/year/mileage?

If its a relatively new car I'd be wary about it, but I think it won't make a difference. Its more so the actual servicing that manufacturers are after.

If its close to being out of warranty then just burst on with it.

    Vauxhall corsa 1.3cdti sxi

Its in warranty until March next year. The way I see it, even if something went wrong under warranty and I gave them the car, they're unlikely to notice new discs and pads and refuse warranty work on that basis surely?!

They quoted £270 for front discs & pads inc fitting. So I asked for parts only - £185. I mean FFS who are they kidding!

Were you planning on telling them in the event of a claim?

So how (assuming you used OEM parts) would they even know?:)

I cannot use OEM parts - because Vauxhall won't tell me who the damn OEM supplier is! And they're quote for parts was silly, I can get EBC discs and pads for £80 which saves £100 on their quote!

Still though, should be grand, just wanted to see what everyone else thought.

Lack of dealer stamp in maintenance booklet, no dealer invoice, no entry in centralised dealer vehicle database for that car?

You can give your car to an independent to do the work using OEM parts, get an invoice and your warranty is sound.

You could play safe and keep the old pads & discs for refit if necessary. Tape the pads to the discs so as to keep the mated surfaces together if they do have to back on. Christ, I feel like an anorak just saying that.

There may be a boundary which you cannot cross in terms of official parts. By this I mean that you obviously won't void the warranty by putting in a generic screenwash but you may void it by having the car serviced at other than an official Vauxhall/GM dealer while the warranty is in force, it all depends on the Ts & Cs in the warranty which you need to study.

There is no way they would void a warrenty on fitting after market brakes unless of course lets say the calliper seized and then they say "your cheap disks and pads caused the calliper to over heat and destroyed it". They would not cover the calliper but if your engine blew what can they say? Of course it will be covered. Just keep the service history there until the warrenty runs out.

Incorrect. EU competition law prohibits this, the so-called "block exemption" legislation. Once OEM parts are used by a VAT registered business, and you can produce an invoice / maintenance booklet with a corresponding stamp, the warranty is intact - if Vauxhall try to tell you differently, contact your local Trading Standards offices in the UK (assuming you are UK based as Vauxhalls haven't been sold here since GM/Opel bought out the brand centuries ago)..
