My wife has taken herself off the pill as we plan to have a child soon. She recently found out she is quite allergic to latex. Is there an alternative to latex condoms? I seem to recall seeing ones created from lamb intenstines before, but they were quite expensive.

if she came off the pill to get pregnant. Do you honestly think condoms are needed?

Why are you gonna be using condoms if you're trying for a baby? But er, Durex Avanti are latex free condoms. As for condoms made out of lamb intestines... eeeeek!

    Durex Avanti Ultima aren't latex.

Maybe she's coming off the pill in advance to give the body time to adjust. I'm sure there is a waiting period before it's all in sync again, so maybe they don't want one right now, just planning ahead.

Sorry I don't know of any though :(

Latex free condoms are easy to come across these days.

Polyurethane and Polyisoprene are the ones to look out for.
The brands are Durex real feel, Avanti, Mates supreme, Trojain Spura and Skyns.

When a couple stop using hormonal contraception (pill, patch, implanon, nuvaring, IUS) it can if the woman's cycle easily 6 months to come back to normal, esp if she is in her late 20 early 30s and has been on the hormonal contraception for 3 plus years.

Condoms are a good way of ramping down the contraception when a couple are starting to look at having a baby but don't want one just yet.

    Thanks Thaedydal, good explanation!

I realize it sounds strange that we are planning to have a baby but want to use condoms, but my wife is thinking like you - wait a few months to get all the pill hormones out of her system.

Didn't realize there were so many options. I'll try to find an example of the sheep intestine ones! LOL

    Lambskin condoms: http://contraception.about.com/od/malecondom/g/lambskin.htm

They are actually made from the intestine but obviously they wouldn't sell the best being called 'Lamb's intestine condoms' so its lambskin instead.

Apparently they feel quite nice and are the closest to real you will get, but they don't stop against sti's as the skin is kinda semi permiable to virus but isn't permiable to sperm.

    Not "baaa-d" investigating, cruizer101!! :D

I too recall hearing they feel really good - even Kings originally used them or something. Since it's my wife I'm not worried about STDs, so I'll ask a pharmacist or order them online just for curiosity sake, if not too expensive. :)

I was sure it was possible to get pregnant straight after stopping the pill...as in a month after. does it not depend on what pill you were using?? definitely wouldnt risk it thou. i mean if this was true, then how come they tell women they can get pregnent if they are sick or miss a few days?? if the pill was effective for 6 months ...sure we'd only be taking it twice a year.

I think its more for dating purposes really, a womens body can take a while to start ovulating again after being on the pill + you can get spotting and stuff that if its heavy enough cn seem like a period (tmi I know)

I know most gps say to wait untill she hs her first proper period after the pill so you can work out the due date of the baby easier.
