Anti-virus software update

My main computer hasn't been in use for a month. On a day-to-day basis there can be anything up to 10 new Avira files installed. Will my comupter be vulnerable to attack while updating the files as I imagine it will take some time for the update to complete. I feel that there can be possibly 2-300 new files to install - am I being too anxious?

I have an up-to-date laptop with different software. Should I download the latest Avira onto a memory stick and load it onto the computer in offline mode?
