folks a quick question was pulled for non display of tax a few weeks ago, Completely my fault, as when i bought the car i thought i taxed it for a year. I had gotten a letter for the DoT a week before giving me an urgent reminder that my tax was nearly 3 months out of date. The OH's aunty works in the DoT, so she rang and she processed it over the phone.

On the day i got pulled the tax disc was in the postbox at home. The gardai said if he checked and i was taxed he wouldn't fine me, but obviously did. Whats the best approach here?

The charge will stand as you didn't display the disc in the window (whether the car is actually taxed isn't the point unfortunately).
Do you have the Gardas name? If so try to contact him/her and come to an agreement so you don't get summoned.

    There are two offences :-

    1. Not having your vehicle taxed.
    2. Not displaying a current valid motor tax disc on your vehicle.

You got fined for no. 2 which is legitimate. Whether your car was taxed at the time of the offence or not doesn't change the fact that you didn't have the disc on display in the vehicle.
