a night at the opera

This definitely falls under the heading of First World Dilemma...
I'm going to an opera in Wexford at the weekend, but I've no idea what to wear.
I guess it has to be dark in colour - does it have to be floor-length? Does it have to be black? And do I have to keep my shoulders covered?

At the moment, the options are:
    1. maxi-length sheath-ish dress in burgundy. spaghetti straps. would wear this with (brown colour, think mouse) fake-fur cape thang tho I'd obvs have to buy a dark shrug, just to keep warm when I take my seat
    2. Just-below-the knee sleeveless "prom-style" dress with silver thread detailing. Again, outside, I'd be teaming it with the fake-fur cape, though it's not ideal. Would I get away with this if I wore black opaque tights?

I know there'll be people who'll say, "Just wear whatever you feel comforable in!" but I'm too old for people to think it's cute if I turn up in something completely inappropriate but loadsa fake tan and great hair.
Where do people go when they need something formal like that? Something grown-up?
