Stuff along the lines of 'No Country for Old Men' or 'Three Burials' - anyone got any recommendations?? Doesn't matter if they're subtitled - cheers!

Machete is pretty good, though its not exactly in the vein of the films you mentioned.

El Mariachi; the world is first introduced to Roberto Rodriguez. Famous for being made on a budget of $7,000 and being a sleeper hit in the USA, this film is not half bad. A simple plot of mistaken identity when two men both wearing black and carrying guitar cases wander into a small Mexican town. One case contains a guitar. The other contains a wicked array of automatic weaponry.

For only seven grand, Rodriguez created something brilliant. While it can look ropey and strained at times, for a debut it is remarkably assured and a solid and at times masterful action film.

Anything from director Alejandro Jodorowsky. A lot of people reference 'El Topo,' but I think it's overrated. Santa Sangre, on the other hand, is one of the best (if least seen) horror films ever made.

Went through a period of a lot of South American films, some quality there but a lot of the names escape me.

One of the more famous ones is Amores Perros, really enjoyed that.
Y u tambien was ok but maybe not what you are looking for.
    Pans Labrynth is quality
Sin Nombre is very good and worth checking out

Definitely one of my favourite Mexico-set films (not that there are all that many!). Quite sexually explicit (not a watch with your grandparents film :pac:), but one of the more interesting road trip films I've come across. It is different than what you might be looking for, OP, but it's a fantastic film.

Jodorowsky is interesting (I've only seen Holy Mountain) but approach with caution - you're entering serious art film territory. Very difficult, challenging and shocking film, but there's plenty to like if you give the madness a chance.

Monsters is a low budget Cloverfield/War Of The Worlds type film set in Mexico, it's good.

All that many Mexico-set films, or all that many of them among your favourites?

Mexico has a pretty healthy film industry, which I keep meaning to explore properly. Aside from the more familiar modern guys like Del Toro and Cuarón, there are some interesting older directors like Buñuel and Jodorowsky.

Voces inocentes (About the El Salvadorean civil war but i was filmed and produced in Mexico)
    El norte
    Amores Perros
    Matando Cabos
    La ley de Herodes

All the above are in Spanish and the last 2 are dark comedies. So subtitles may not put across some of the humor. A lot of Mexican films are heavy on slang anyways so suppose you never really get it the way a local would. Does my head in when i see how lazy the subtitles are with the translation.

And the below are some that have a good few scenes in Mexico.

    Traffic
    Babel
    Man on fire
    The Matador
    The ruins

a bit off topic, but Red Hill, which was shown at the Horrorthon (but isn't remotely a horror movie), is an Australian 'western' that you could compare to No Country... and Three Burials. Check it out.

What about westerns?? Good few set in Mexico, The Professionals, The Wild Bunch, Major Dundee, The Magnificent Seven to name a few.

Not to forget that great classic of the cinema Elvis in "Fun in Acapulco"

Pan's Labyrinth was set, and filmed, in Spain. The writer/director is Mexican but the film is very much of a Spanish theme and setting.

Would Apocalypto be considered mexican? Or was it more modern day Guatemala.

Yeah but it almost seems like the op is asking for a reason so no point in misleading him. There is already a great film recommendation thread.

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia is a great movie from Sam Peckinpah, shot on a low budget in Mexico in the early 70's, well worth checking out
