    Hi,

I'm flying from Dublin to Vancouver in November and stopping over in Chicago for a few hours, I read on another thread that I need to complete an ESTA as I'm transitting though the USA, can this possibly be the case when I am not even leaving the airport??

How long does an ESTA last anyway? Do I need to complete one for every trip to the USA in a year?

Yes, you do need an ESTA. The way the airport is set up there is nothing stopping you leaving the airside area while waiting for your Canada flight. A completed ESTA is valid for 2-years, you can go in during this time using your confirmation number and update details such as flight number etc.
