iPhone 3GS frequent data "calls"

I recieved my phone bill today only to discover that my iPhone 3GS (running iOS4.1 on Meteor unlocked by O2) seems to be making data "calls" every 10 minutes. The volume is 7kb for each although sometimes it seems to rise. Push notifications and email are turned off.

Anyone have any idea what this is?

Is there any way to view a log of cellular data requests on the iPhone?

its more than likely an app, no way to know which one unless ya delete 1 a day until it stops happening

I don't believe so. I disabled cellular data last night at 8 and turned it back on at 12 to see if it had a period of no activity. That was fine. No requests were made as you would expect.

So, I left teh phone on charge overnight with cellular data back on and no apps open in the background. It made data calls every 10 minutes for most of the night. They began at around 7kb but up around 3am went to 13kb.

same thing with me .. had to just turn data off cos i kept getting a message at roughly 8.03 every morning saying 'if you would like to use meteor data you will need to top up' (or something like that) .. im on prepay. 4.1 iphone 3g .. pain in me arse . didnt have this before 4.1 so its definitely the iphone trying to retrieve email or something?
but it seemed like it was every 24hrs for me?
and when i did have credit it cost me 99c a day! although no emails would come through?!

Funny that, I'm exactly like you, have moved to Meteor, unlocked 02 iphone 3gs and since the last update 4.1 my phone is also making data calls every 10/20 mins. They're also 7kb or 13kbs. All notifications (including push) are turned off yet it seems to still be contacting the internet......

The only way I can stop this happening is to turn off Cellular data.

I rang Meteor to see if they could tell me where the data was going to but they said that they couldn't.

Has anyone figured out why/what the requests are???

I'd say it could be the way billing works cos on o2 there's a 48kb usage and then 49mb plus any other data used that shows up around 12 every night but another poster said they get a message to top up to use data so I'm not sure

Nothing to do with meteors billing. It only started as of iOS 4.1. I did a complete reset and the issue seems to be fixed.

How do you do the complete reset? Did you lose everything (photos etc) when you did it?

ya can do it in settings or else do a restore and set up as new phone
ya will lose everything thats not set to sync, ya can sync contacts, notes and calender with gmail

It's an option in the settings menu down the bottom. When you plug the phone in after the wipe it'll ask do you want to set it up as a new phone or the existing one. If you use the existing one you'll get all yer stuff back.

Even if you dont get everything you can download software to extract contacts, images and whatever from an old backup. I set mine up as a new phone and used this (http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com/) one sucessfully.

Have similar stuff on my bill but the size can be from 5kb to 100kb every ten minutes all last month. They couldnt even fit my bill in the normal envelope !

Im using a HTC Desire btw (wrong forum I know :P) On meteor bill pay too.

This could be coming from any number of apps you have on your phone.
Go to setting and turn off notifications.

All notifications are turned off and the only app I have on my phone is the newstalk app. It's only been happening since the upgrade to 4.1.

Sorry to drag this thread back from the grave, but I've just noticed I'm getting billed for data every 20-30 mins all throughout the day and night aswell, did any of the above recommendations work, if so, which ones? Thanks!

you more than likely have email set to fetch every 30 mins
