Two root canals and crowns needed...

So was at the dentist there today as I had an abcess above my canine tooth. Had it drained, then had and x-ray done. Dentist said I needed two root canals done, as soon as possible(The teeth ae beside eachother, canine and first premolar). I asked would it be neccessary to get crowns also and I was informed I most definetely should.I was prescribed antibiotics to quell the infection. The puss was also drained out of the abcess. Then I was referred to a specialist as this dentist does not perform root canals. I was told the total procedure would cost the balls of €4000.

I have a couple of questions I hope people on here can help me with.

    1. When do I have to get this done? I kept asking the dentist this and the reply was as soon as possible. I mentioned would 2 months be OK to wait and didn't get any answer, just 'as soon as possible'. I then asked would much damage be done my teeth bone if I waited two months and I was told 'hard to say'. The reason I ask this is that I'm a college student and would preferably get it done up in the North at the beginning of January, when I have my holidays so I can stay up there for a few days.

    2. Could anybody reccomend a practice up in Northern Ireland ( PM me) to get this done? Somewhere that is known for its quality of procedures at an affordable price. I don't want a cheap job done on this and come a couple of years down the line start to get problems.

Sorry for bothering you all, I'm just really stressed out at this as it has come at a bad time in my life. I'm only 20 and it's alot to take in.

€4000 is way more than you should pay for 2 rct's and 2 crowns, if this dentist does not do root canals, just ring around your locality, there will be plenty of dentists who will do this for half that price.

Thank you for the reply davo10, could you give me any sort of advice on my first question?

As with all medical/dental issues, how quickly you need to get your rct can only be recommended by a dentist who's seen your teeth and their condition. It'll vary from patient to patient and tooth to tooth.

As a patient who's had problems with abscesses before, I don't think holding out for ages is a good idea. It could be fine, it could cause more problems and end up in a lot more pain.

As for the treatment. You could try and get the treatments done in stages. For example, go and have your root canals done and then wait a little while before you get your teeth crowned. At least if the root canal is done you shouldn't have to worry about having much more pain. However, don't put off having crowns done for too long as teeth which are dead tend to weaken, thus increasing your chances of damaging or breaking them.

As davo mentioned, call another few dentists to see if they do root canal treatments and if they do make an appointment to see them and hear what they advise you.

Re the cost: I had 2 rtcs and crowns done about 8 years ago on 2 front teeth and the total price was about 1200 or 1500 (roughly, can't remember exactly). They were done by my 'GP' dentist who gave me a discount because I was having both teeth done at the same time.

That sound like specialist prices on molars. 800 per RCT + 1200 per crown. It is tax deductable at 20% BTW so could take some of the sting out.
