my wife was at the dentist this morning got one filling and got bottom teeth cleaned with the hygenist, its was one of the white fillings she needs to go back next week for another filling and to get her top teeth cleaned.dentist took 25 min and the cleaning took 30 min.the bill came to 250 euro today and it will be the same next week so that is 500 euro for 2 fillings and for the hyenist to clean all teeth.does this not seem a bit dear in this day and age.she was told last week the filling should not cost any more than 80 and the clening no more than 80 euro so it would have been around 150 - 160 for the hours work.when she asked why it was a lot more than qouted he just said that they needed a more work little than normal.should she not have told this before he started work on the teeth.money is very tight at moment i am not working so she will have to cancel next weeks app.what do people think about this price.it is the dentist her family have used for a good few years and i have used him myself.

gotta say, it sounds expensive, unless you can see reflections on the teeth after the hygienist. €100 is not a bit more, it's a lot more. did she get a treatment plan?

no plan was just told last week at a check up that she needed 2 fillings and a clean.what i dont understand is why it takes two vists to get teeth cleaned.we rang dentist this eveing and he said he will find out why the cleaning bill was so high.when i asked why the filling was so dear he just said thats what he charges.so a filling from him costs anywhere from 70-130 euro, whats stoping him chargeing everyone 120 for them.

the only thing i can suggest is that maybe there's a serious amount of cleaning well below gum level to be done, which may need anaesthetic. in that case, it's usually done over 2 or 4 visits.
however, if the filling was much bigger than expected which seems the case, then it would've been better to tell her and give the option of the cleaning later. breakdown in communication.

    Hi Harr,
You should have been given the cost prior to treatment and any changes explained before the work was done (with large fillings the teeth are often worse than first appeared and other options need to be discussed). Also many adults need extensive cleaning, but cleaning is only part of the job. It appears there has been a lack of communication with you. It is however unkikely the dentist deliberately charged more than the correct fee for his work but that he qouted you for lesser work ad didnt think to tell you the change.
tell him you are not happy and want a reduction if your feel aggrieved, he hsould take this on board. If not go to another dentist in future. Dentistry is a service and we want, and need, to look after our patients,
    all the best with it

Was the original quote given to your wife by the dentist after he had examined her?
Or did she first phone the dentist to ask "how much is a cleaning" and "how much is a filling".
We often get people phoning our office asking for prices. We tell them what the average is or the fee may range from x to y depending on circumstances. People generally only remember the lower price though. I'm not blaming them . They don't often comprehend what is involved.

thanks for the replies.i spoke to the dentist this morning on the phone and he did agree that there was a lack of communication and he did not intend to overcharge he said the price was fair for the work that was done and in the futher he will make the point to tell people of any extra cost.as a good will jesture he will not charge for next weeks cleaning which is fair enough and i am glad that he has taken my points on board.he was very professional about the whole thing.

Well, I paid e95 for a white filling a few weeks ago. Used to be e70. Yes, he should have been more upfront. Totally agree and you were right to say something.
