Been searching for cheap SSL certs from Irish websites and found freshhosting.ie selling them for €15 a year which is the cheapest I have found. Thought I'd share!

what exactly is an SSL cert?

Im trying to upload a logo from imageshack to a paypal check out page, but payal says that the image must be uploaded from a secure website(https),
is this what I'm looking for?

    Thanks

The thing about SSL certs is that the certificate authority (freshhosting.ie) should verify your actual identity before issuing the cert.

If you need a really secure site for e-commerce, then the last thing you want is to use a cheap SSL certificate authority who could be spoofed into giving out a copy of your SSL cert to someone else impersonating you.

So you get what you pay for.
Also, ensure that they don't put your credit card on a recurring renewal charge every 1-2 years.

Yep you need an SSL cert and some hosting. For this type of thing the €15 one is perfect for you. If you are just starting online I see no problem with the €15 cert.

so, I want to upload 1 image to my paypal page to give it the look and feel of the main website. I currently have no hosting package as I'm using shopify.com to host my online store.

Does this mean I have to pay for an ssl cert. and a years hosting package just to upload 1 image, which will take about 1-2 minutes?

    Thanks.

Just get an Amazon S3 account and you'll get HTTPS links without any problem. You can host anything you'd like (Including a full website) and you only pay for what you use.
