What type of putter do you use?

Just wondering what type of putter you all use, to me the most important club in the bag.

I use a Ping Anser which was purchased around 1995 and its cut down to 33"

Tried an Odyssey 2 ball for a while but went back to the Ping. Thinking about a change again maybe

I changed to the Nike Method (the one Tiger couldn't use in the Open), last May and couldn't believe the difference. I've always believed that putting is mostly mental and the putter shouldn't really matter, but when you start holing putts from all over the place it certainly gives you more confidence.

The Method has grooves in the face which is supposed to make the ball roll rather than skid when you strike it and I have to say it really works.

Between May and August I went from 13 down to 9, and in that time I had 5 rounds where the most putts I had was 26, one round I only had 22, including 5 between 8 to 10 feet.

Definitely the best bit of equipment I ever bought.

Taylormade Rossa here, went through a lot of putters before i got one that felt right. Has helped my game no end.

Odyssey 2 ball with length of shaft reduced.

Love it don't know what I'll do if it breaks

Maybe you need lesson with your irons if your missing that many greens and need so many one putts :D (only joking, thats good putting).

I use a Yes! putter similar technology with grooves getting the ball to roll and I love it, I have really noticed recently on hollow cored greens that my ball bobbles a lot less than other people putting with standard putter faces.

I use the Fisher Touch, the burgund insert, mallet head. I have it for 10 years now I'd say. I like it, and have gone through periods of putting very nicely. It has a nice and heavy head on it, lovely soft touch. If I were to be critical, I think with the softer ball that I tend to use, I think it comes off the face a little slower than is good for my stroke, especially on slower greens. It is also too long for me (36 inches I think) but I have never done anything about it, because I like the option of holding it long at times.

I have a Scotty Cameron newport 2.5 and an odyssey XG no.7 center shafted, both shafts cut to 33'' and alternate between the two depending on my mood, at the moment I'm using the SC and putting well.

odyssey marksman blade with XG insert.
Feel is soft but responsive. been using it so long now i rarely stand over a put and not feel very confident over my distance control. Alignment imo is a piece of cake. all it needs is someone capable enough to do it justice!

one issue i have is i'd like to have it shortened to circa 33".... spoke to a fitter who was totally against shortening putters and point blank refused to do it. the whole issue with the weight and balance of the putter being compromised if the shaft is shortened.

Aster99, Carnsoreboxer....how did you guys that had you putter shortened get around this? or was it an issue at all?

    apologies for off topic meandering

Nike Method 001 blade, absolutely brilliant

Had to get my putter shortened as it was inclined to get caught up in my jumper, especially during winter. I had no problem having it shortened and was advised to do so. Have had lessons from different pros since and they never made a negative comments about it.

Yes it took a while to get used to, not much, just some time spent on putting green.

Putting has always been the strongest part of my game, until this season, that is, when I changed clubs but getting the feel of the greens at last, oops hope I haven't put the mockers on it now!

I use a Ping G5i. I've gotten a fat grip put on it and love the feel it gives.

i got it done in Nevada Bobs, it was a 35" and got 2 inches off it. made a huge difference to me anyway and have done much better since getting it done.

Rotate between the Yes Nicky -

    22.jpg

    .. and Tracy -

    yes%20tracy2-beauty.jpg

Depends on the speed of the greens, weather, etc.

The Nicky is shortened to 33.5" and 1 deg upright
    The Tracy is standard 34"

Not entirely comfortable with the Tracy due to the hosel. Much prefer the look of the Tracy II.

Have a Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2.6
Center shfted, 33 inces, love it!

Cut me from 31 to 18 this year! :D

Was palying with a Ram Zebra but then decided to upgrade!

Cleveland Classic 2 heel shafted and Ping I-series Piper H (heel shafted as well) both 35", alternate between both depending on mood, have to say the Cleveland is a lovely little putter - I was looking at a new Scotty heel shafted and to be honest there was very little diference between the two (except maybe €150). At this time of year I might pull out and old 33" Taylor Made Rossa Daytona for tined greens and putt left hand below right.

I use a 33" Progen red eye putter which i like but still not 100% comfortable with. I like the look of the Nike method putter and the Yes Callie, one of which will probably make it into the bag before the end of the year.

Had the exact same view myself till recently, could'nt understand why people were forking out big money for putters.
I was using a Nickent Hush putter and missing too many from 5ft and so on so changed to an old Dunlop that was lying around and has improved things alot using same putting technique.

In the hunt now for a new putter that might give me more confidence standing over putts but it's headwrecking with so many makes and models. Like the look of that Nike Method 001 and might splash out on one tomorrow or anyone have one of those Cleveland classics that are on sale for €65 in McGuirks? All down to personal preference i suppose.
I still seem to have a mental block justifying €134 for a putter but this thread is swaying my view alot.
That the cheapest around for the Nike?
Game would cost you a fortune :D

If you are getting a new putter there are 3 types out there which are set up for 3 differant putting strokes look at your putting stroke and check what type of stroke you have is it {inside to out }[streight in and out] or (outside to in )?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 208 ✭✭Sammo13

Ping Zing - 34 inchs shaft - nice putter, I think the length of shaft is most important.

Got the Cleveland classic 1 34 inches, there for ages in McGuirks i was on Saturday and that was the one i felt most comfortable with.
Played yesterday with it and improved as the round went on getting the feel of it so hoping over next couple rounds it will do the trick.

    ***Edit***
Out of the blue i am after geting an old Ping Anser dropped into me that i was chasing for a while
Will try and sell the Cleveland now to put towards a custom fit driver in Foregolf or just keep both if i can't sell it as it's a nice putter, raging !!!

Ok, I just read some of the posts and one said length is the most important, yes it is along with lie and loft. Length and lie go together, loft is all to do with the type of greens you play most + the time of year, summer time fast greens, less loft, winter time slow greens, more loft. This does not mean get 2 putters but find a clubmaker near you and he can change the loft to suit the greens you play. Next personal preference, are you talking about feel or brand? If you are talking about brand this will not help your putting. If you are talking about feel then this has to do with head weight, shaft weight and what type of grip. So feel happens when you pick up the club and give it a few swings, the length and lie is to do with your arm hang and line of sight, loft is to do with getting the ball up and running at the right pace avoiding as much skid as possible. But what about your swing your putting stroke? The part that gets everything in motion?
