    Please provide more information:

The make and model of your laptop, the operating system.

You need to describe the problem better. If you're running on battery and you plug it in:
Does the laptop shut off as if the power was cut?
Does only the screen turn off but the on/off light stays lit?
Does it go into standby or hibernation?
Is there any error or warning messages at any point?

If the laptop is off and charging what happens when you press the power button? Does it look and sound like it's booting up but the screen stays off?
Does it not turn on at all?

Sounds like an odd problem. It could be something to do with power management or a BIOS issue. The fact that the problem started around the time you got the new charger could be just coincidence. I still need a bit more information to take a stab at a solution I'm afraid:

    Click 'start' and then 'run'.
    Type 'dxdiag' and hit enter.

If it prompts you about certificates or signatures you can click no.

A box should pop up with tabs along the top and information in the middle. From that information please fill out the following (in full, with all letters and numbers):

    Operating system:
    System model:
    BIOS:

Click the 'display' tab and get:

    Name:
    Version:

If 'dxdiag' can't be found, type 'msinfo32' and copy the information from the similarly named fields.

I had a quick look around and unfortunately it dosen't seem very common and there's no sure solution.

I'm not convinced it's a problem with your power adapter, but you could try getting another. It could be a hardware fault, probably with your motherboard, which would be expensive to replace. If you're under warranty, send it back. If not, it might not be worth repairing.

First, Try this (its a long shot): Go to start->control panel click on 'classic view' (if you never did it before) and click 'power options'. Look at the power saving options. Set everything to the option that involves consuming as much power as possible and reboot. In particular, if you have an option about 'processor power' make sure its at 100%.

Try updating your BIOS, its out of date. Its possible toshiba messed up and they've fixed it. The process is straight forward but if it goes wrong your laptop won't work at all. Make sure you backup all your files on an external hard drive first. Its not advisable to do this on battery power, but you seem to have no choice, make sure you're fully charged. You can download the latest version BIOS for your model from the toshiba website here:

    Good luck.
