How important is mileage?

How important is mileage when buying a used car? Im currently looking at a 2007 Diesel Honda civic with 81000 miles and im not sure if it sounds high or average for that year. What kind of problems would one encounter as the mileage goes higher and higher. I plan to keep it for about 5 years and will probably do about 20k miles per year.

Well the previous owner did the same mileage you intend to do.
Thats about normal for a diesel IMO, you've be cracked in head buying a diesel doing less

81,000 miles is higher than average for the age, and as it's an 07 with a miles clock, it must have come over from the UK.

2.2 engine so will cost €823 a year to tax.

If it's cheap enough, it should be a good buy as it's a Honda Diesel.

It's probably also an ex. company car at that mileage, so should have a full service history. If it doesn't - walk away.

It up north and is advertised in miles but from what ive seen from a previous test drive the Civic has a function to flip between miles and Km's due to its digital screen. Its only £6,000 but what has me drawn to it is the full specs (rare in ireland) and the high tax band still works out cheaper over the long run compared to the current price of a 08. Seems the irish governments change in car tax prices has drove a gulf between prices of 07 and 08 used cars.

    Mileage is not always paramount.

For example i would rather buy a car that has done 100000 km on motorways and serviced regularly than a car that has done 50000 km over potholed backroads driven by someone who has a blindspot for service intervals and holes in the roads.

running cost wise going from a 1.4 petrol to 1.9 diesel i found i broke even at about 10-12 thousand miles.. granted a diesel of the same year and milage will cost more to buy...

Good servicing and parts are more important than mileage for the reasons suggested above IMO. Cars and engines are so refined they drive for a lot longer than people seem to realise.

£6k plus exchange to euro and vrt is fairly saucy for a 07 civic. Thats Accord money imo.
