hi, im just wondering is there any way of just getting standard cable into an apartment. i dont wana be absolutely ripped off by the likes of upc again and was just wondering if there was any company or anyone that does just bog standard cable tv, ya know like 20 or 30 channels, just like mtv, e4, comedy central and all the rest but only about 20 or 30 channels??

i had this set up before in an apartment i lived in in college and it was the best. alot of the stuff on the likes of upc are just a waste of time having one because id find i wouldnt watch most of the channels.

im in dublin by the way, dublin 7 actually.

if there is such a service( dont see why there wouldnt be, every town in the country has these small providers who arent expensive) how much would it cost? dont want to have to be forking out 30 or 40 euro a month to have tv channels i wont be watching if you know what i mean!

thanks for any help you can give me, its much appriciated.

Such providers as you suggest don't exist generally.

if you want Cable in Dublin, the only viable solution is UPC.

Magnet in a few places does a cable like IPTV service.

There is Homevision. But I'd not go that route.

Some apartments have their own systems. That may be what you had. Most of those unless communal dish and your own sat receiver are terrible.

oh right, so they dont really exist in dublin!? crap! nearlly every town in the country has these type of providers, so thats why i thought that dublin of all places would have these! thanks for the reply

    No they don't

There is a small provider in Longford. Caseyvision in Dungarvan and UPC any place else with cable/MMDS (ex Chorus & NTL areas). Most smaller towns don't have cable at all.

ok thanks for the reply, looks like it will be just the areal for now or get 100% ripped off by upc!

How did UPC rip you off before ?

Small providers, other than Casey and a couple of small analogue only providers (I think there are only 5 left) are a thing of the past really. Consolidation has been the way of the cable industry since the early 1990s and TBH its a good thing. The small companies (some of which were VERY small - maybe a couple of hundred houses or less cabled) would never have been able to offer digital TV services to rival Sky.

How did UPC rip you off before ?

after cancelcelling the service and then paying for the cancellation i continued to get charged for the internet i had with them even though it was a package deal and i had informed them i was cancelling it all because it was all in the one package, internet and tv, moved out of the house, paid the month and cancellation fee and then they continued to charge me 30euro a month for internet and kept ringing me constantly about it even though i explained my position over and over, they were not exactly the nicest or most professional company to deal with in this sense, not to mention the tv service going on the blink at least once a week.

in the end they sent me a debt collectors letter saying to pay what i owe for go to court, i explained the position to the debt collection agency and had letters and bills and reciepts to back it up! they passed on my personal details to this debt collection agency without letting me know before hand and when i asked for the transcripts from the phone calls and my contract they could not provide anything despite numerous requests. it was just one of these things that left a bad taste in the mouth. turns out i was all paid up and finally 4 months later it was dropped.

its a pity there is no such services anymore, i remember having one at home years ago when i was still in school before my parents got sky in, i would not be looking for such a big package, just something with 20 or 30 channels, looks like im not going to find it!
