How to charge for travel costs?

I've recently set up a new business in the wedding service industry and I'm hoping someone could give me advice on how much to charge for travel costs.

I have a sort of rule of thumb that I will charge travel expenses for any job I do that is more than 50k away from where I live - is this fair?

Also, would anyone be able to suggest a sort of calculation that would determine the price based on distance?

I'm not trying to add charges or anything, I just want to cover the cost of petrol, car usage etc.

Anyone out there in a similar situation? Wedding photographers for example?

My business wouldn't be earning anywhere near the price of photographers / videographers so I can't just include it really.

    Any help is appreciated.

I've seen a lot of businesses in the past charge travel rates according to the civil service travel rates. I'm sure you can probably google these.

It's always a very tricky area, as even though its a totally understandable expense, customers/clients always hate having to pay for it. Trying to charge by the mile always leaves a sour taste in peoples mouths.

If you could manage it at all I'd be more inclined to include fixed charges when you first talk to them about fees. Maybe talking to them in the tune of "Well this event will require x trips to the venue etc" so overall there'll be a charge of Y to cover travel expenses. That would seem more reasonable to me.
