Not so much of a fix but it might be a work around.

When you press Ctrl+Alt+Del and get the task manager click file -> run
    type explorer.exe and click run

you should get your icons etc. back

let me know if you do and I will help fix the real issue.

Out of interest try again this time entering:
    C:\Windows\explorer.exe
    in the box.

Do you have access to an external CD drive and a windows XP disk or is there a recovery partition on the netbook. (If there is send me on the model number of the netbook)

many thanks hearny, tried C:\Windows\explorer.exe but to no avail, tried for recovery partition by pressing ctrl+F12 on start up (dell notebook) again no success, i do not at present have access to an external cd drive or windows xp disk but will look for these and comr back to you. this may take a few days. again thanks for your help

If you have a USB pen drive then you could try to get ubuntu installed on it.

You will have to format the pen drive so make sure you take a backup of it first.

You should then be able to boot ubuntu and restore the missing explorer.exe (Obviously there may be more files missing but this will be a start)

Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download and follow the instructions

I will send you the explorer.exe and you can restore it to the C:\Windows folder
PM me your email address if you want me to send it
