Noise pollution

    Hi folks.
I would like to get the opinions of some of the people here regarding a matter.
Since the 1st of the month someone has been shooting every day near my house, this goes on from 9am till around 6pm.
Basically a shotgun blast every 5-10 mins all day, every day, for a week and a half now.
There are quite a few isolated houses around the area and a few "bunches" (5-6 houses together) of houses also, ie it's not what you would call isolated.
The noise from this is unbearable and when you forget it's going on, gives quite a shock.
Now before I find out who it is and mention it him/her, I would like to know if people who are into this sport would think this amount of noise is un/acceptable.
Do you have "unwritten rules" among yourselves about how much disturbance is/can be caused.
There are often people shooting around here, as in lots of country areas and its no problem, but this is something I have never experienced before and it really seems out of order.
(Its still going on now, since 9 am)

    Hi
going by what you said and the intermittent timing of the blasts,(every 5-10 minutes daily) I would nearly bet that someone has installed a gas gun in the area to scare animals birds etc off their land-crops etc. These are timed to go off every 5-10 minutes or can be regulated to go off at different intervals. Basically it is an attachment joined to a gas bottle gas is released and ignites causing a bang,it is fairly loud, maybe someone else will give you a better idea of one here but that is the gist of it.

    +1 Sounds like a crowbanger.

I think they must be timed to only be active during day-light hours.

Or go and find it and turn it off.

    It's not one of them.
It's defiantly gunfire, it moves around, changes volume and stops for lunch ;)
Also it's not as regular as one (I grew up hearing one of them).
The kids are at school at the moment.

All is peacefull now, it seems strange.,
Thanks for the replies by the way.

Very odd. Definitely not a time you'd hear a lot of shotgun noise, particularly moving around, which sounds more like rough shooting, and wrong tempo anyway, wouldn't be that much. Unless you live in the middle of the most intense deer stalking location in the world, it's unlikely to be rifle fire (though remember that centrefire rifles can be heard an awfully long way away). If it's loud enough to disturb you, it'll be pretty close, so might be worth going and investigating?

There could be more than one gas gun inthe fields going off at different times, hence you thinking its moving around, cant imagine someone out shooting that much for a week and ahalf solid , unless you live near a new range you havnt been informed of!

    are you near kilworth?

I didn't want to start asking around just over a couple of days noise, but it's gone on long enough now, so I will start checking things out tomorrow.
I will let ye know, whatever it turns out to be.

From 9am to 6pm every day for a week & a half? Very, very odd carry on. My first thought would have been a bird scarer too.

Let's face it: Ammo's too shagging expensive for someone to do that much shooting. :p

9-6 would be just an average, there were 2 half days and, one, evening only.
Sometimes not starting till 10-11. The odd 1 -2 hour break ....etc

I've never complained about anything like this in my life and I really don't want to start now.
    I'll see what happens tomorrow.

Thats what I thought. How much does a shotgun shell cost??

Yeah, that's 50-60 shells a day for a straight week and a half...

It'd be alright if it's a shotgun costing about 15-20c a pop, but if it's deer stalkers, you're talking more like €2 a shot.

Bugger, I thought it might be more for the shotgun (I'm being selfish here).
Using the figures quoted thats just over 80 quid a week.
There are some pretty rich folk round here.
I'm not wealthy by anyones measure but just lucky to live in what an estate agent would call "a prime countryside/coastal location".

I bet somebody got a new shotgun, bought 1000 shells for a good price and is now delighted with himself blasting everything that moves (or not) at any spare time he has - which seems to be plenty  will be interesting to hear what the actual source of the noise is

it wouldnt b uncommon for farmers to pay for ammo crows do awful ammount of damage to crops especially potatoes so like myself scratchin my u know what love when the farmers give me 500+ cartriges to try rid or (scare) crows away but its common sence to call round to nearby houses to see if there would b a problem

I suppose to answer the question that was asked, purely from my own point of view. If my shooting was enough to make an "ordinary" (read, not highly strung, not anti) person complain then yeah it's too much, too close and shouldn't be happening.

Crows and pigeons would mostly be shot out of hides I imagine, so a static position. But this noise seems to be on the move?

The thing that get's me is the time involved. Young lad should be at school? Unemployed lad shouldn't be able afford the shells?

    I don't know.

Found out yesyerday what that was.
Gunfire and and a crow-banger, he started using a shotgun to scare the birds then started up a banger after a few days. Occasionally going out with the gun for "variety".
After complaints (from other neighbours, I didn't have to get involved) in fairness to him he has stopped.
just thought I'd let ye know. ;)
Again, thanks for the replys, Cheers.

Thanks for coming back with the story.
To be honest, you won't be watching much if the greys, magpies., etc., are not brought under control;).
