    Hi there,

Was wondering does anyone have any advice on buying running shoes, best brand, things to look out for, where to go to buy them, how much should i spend or does this matter? Or should I just invest in a good pair of orthopics to fit in to my run of the mill asics runners?

    Thanks for any advice.

Depends on what you want them for as was said above it can be different for different surfaces, distances etc.

For long distance I go for Nike Lunarglides for shorter distances I go for Saucony Fasttwitch. Be carfeul where you buy if you're trying to get advice, I asked for a 6.5 in JJB the other day, was told they don't do half sizes but a size 7 in adidas is the same as a 6.5 in other brands...he insisted that I should get an adidas size 7 even though I said I'm not changing from Lunarglides...

Hi, eh apologies for that, i'm a newbie to all this running lingo. I ran the fun run on Saturday for the simon community and have been in bits ever since, defo think new runners are in order. Can't imagine i'll be doing a 5mile any time soon after saturday :) but that's the kind of stuff i'm talking about, running on a treadmill in gym for a bit and out on grass & concrete when the weather is nice but nothing major, no marathon running just yet!!!

Any advice on where to go to buy runners? I work in the City Centre and live in Dublin 6 so anywhere close would be handy. There is the obvious sports shops but would i be better off going somewhere that specialises in running?

A lot of people would just recommend going to a good store like Runways or Amphibian King (Dublin area, don't know about rest of country), where you could get your gait checked out, and they'd recommend suitable shoes.

On the other hand, I'd say what's wrong with your run of the mill Asics? If you're not having trouble with them, then why change? Actually, some of these companies have guides on their websites to help choosing.

If you are not used to running 5miles on concrete and tarmac then I'm not surprised that you are suffering. Do lots of stretching, it will pass. Congrats on doing the race.

It may be that your ASICS are not suitable for road running, but unless
you intend taking up road running, investing in new runners may not be
    a good investment.

A decent pair of runners that are comfortable are a really really good idea when road running, but there is probably too much emphasis on convincing people that they need orthotics and very expensive brand runners as soon as they put a foot on the road.

If you do think that you need new runners, then the standard advice is to go to a specialist shop Amphibian King in Bray and Runways in Parnell St are frequently recommended here.

The advice from my physio is that gait analysis is fine, but not very scientific.
The pair of runners that are comfortable and feel right to you are probably the best ones.

The marathon expo in the RDS the weekend after next might be worth a visit. A good number of shops will be there selling their wares. Maybe not the best place for prices, but I have got gait analysis done for free a few times, and it is a good place to learn about the different types of runners available.

It is free entry, and a nice to check out the buzz even if you're not running.

I just think I need a new pair of runners because my friend also did the race with me on Saturday and we have been training together so our standard would be very similar and she was grand after the race, unlike me :) she has a pair of sketchers shape-up's with a rounded sole on them unlike my normal flat sole asics. The runners are the only common denominator I can see between us.

    Thanks for all your replies.

If that's the case I'm surprised it's you hurting and not her!

really? No offense but I doubt the runners are the only difference. She might have better form, strength, stamina etc..
