    Hi guys,

I've been looking at cars lately in advance of my ever reliable Almera ever dying on me (166K miles and counting).

I've been looking at Diesels, preferably saloons with a decent spec and good performance.

I've identified the following so far:

    Honda Accord Executive
VW Golf GTD (not a saloon though but will still consider)
    Skoda Octavia VRS TDI

What do ye think of this bunch and any other ideas?

    Thanks.

An 08 530d is great value for money IMO.

    Budget?

    Sorry forgot to mention that.

Budget would be about €10K. May push it up a grand or two depending on the particular car.

I'd say your best bet would be the Octavia VRS....you can fit planet earth in the boot ;)

Am definitely enticed by the Octavia VRS, it's a a 2L with 170bhp out of it, happy days. Big boot too. :D

The Mondeo ST Tdci wouldn't be too bad, must check the cost o it.

great car :) been driving one for last couple of years :) Genuine 40+ mpg which is not bad for when feeding a lot of the 170 Horses :) Very good car IMHO

Good stuff. Anything I should be watching out for if buying one? Any reliability issues? Thanks.

Is it? Considering a 2.4 Alfa JTD outputting near 200bhp and designed +7years prior to the VRS does 45mpg.

    or

An e60 520d (boo hiss) can be mapped to 220bhp and gets nearer 48mpg. An e60 520d is a faster car than the original 530d's too...

Have the ST TDCI, sound car, plenty of room, plenty of poke and cheap to run and maintain. Getting around 47.5 mpg so I am sure there are higher economy cars out there.
Only down side is the 2.2 litre engine compared to the Octavia.

Either cars will be good buys.

    Yup.
    Octy vRS is the one.
Bought a new one last week and love it more and more each time I get into it.

The Accord 2.2 has good torque and gives 50 mpg. Reliable too and 10k should get a 2005.

    ROFL!! :D

    Thanks for the ideas lads.

I'll add the Mondeo and probably the Saab to the mix.

Not sure about the Alfas though. Lovely cars but isn't their poor reliability reputation warranted? I'm pretty used to good reliability driving a Mk1 Almera (boring car though!).

The rep isn't justified on the diesels, petrol Alfas are another thing altogether though. Great cars, loved mine and never had any trouble with it, frugal too, similar MPG, if not a little better than the Mondeo. I had the 150bhp 1.9 JTdM.

Yep, thats what they say, the diesel engines in the Alfa are an entirely different family of engines with different origins than the petrols.

Mine is running great despite having a complete tool as a PO.

Accord is nothing special, I drove alot of powerful diesels before going turbo petrol and the Accord was probably the most gutless of all the diesels I tried.Coming from a mapped Fabia vrs it did feel slow and no comparison to the Octy Vrs which felt like it had more grunt than 170bhp suggests, it was genuinely fast ( even compared to my 260bhp mazda 3 mps ) and pulled from nothing, bomb it in 6th and it goes.330d was great as well, not as fast as fellas at work were telling me, awesome torque, but it is thirsty if you drive hard.

Key word highlighted there. VRs is nothing special really. MPS would blow it into the weeds, regardless of what anything feels like. The Accord is a decent engine and a better car than the Octavia. The suspension is leagues ahead.
