You should ditch the truffle hunter and join Marble City Cyclers ;) There's a couple of walking trails, one off the Callan road on the way into the city and there's another one near Dunnamaggin. I'm trying to buy a mountain bike at the moment. There's a couple of KK boardsie who're into all that and I'm sure they'll put you in a much better light that I could.

Slievenamon (Sliabh na mBan) is good if you like steep.

Best advice - get a road bike (sorry about the bias)

I met Super Freak in Ballyhoura last weekend, he mentioned that he mtb's with a group in Stradbally. Drop him a pm for the details...
Ignore the Eurocrats truffle hunting is the best way to spend the winter months:D

I used to do alot of hill walking up Slievenamon and I'll be honest I've never seen anyone on a bike up there,. I've seen walkers, runners and idiots on motorbikes and thats it. Its pretty steep in parts but I suppose its suitable none the less.

There's some old woods near Callan you could use, forget the trail Kilkenny routes as well they are for walking and wouldn't be very exciting. The one in Callan is just around the abbey meadow and is even boring to walk in fairness.

I meant the surrounding area. Sorry. Respect though to anyone who cycles up the mountain, or down. It's hard enough when we walk up there.

    He man,

There is some biking to be had in Chair, Stradbally, Inniostige, Mt Leinster and even some XC right in town.

Might be too late to resurrect this old thread but here goes anyway, Would be very interested in hearing about the "XC right in town" - anyone have any further details?
Any other options in or close to town, ideally on the Dublin Road side?

Along the Nore down to Bennettsbridge, I'm up for it most evenings, or maybe tomorrow or Friday during the day.

Thanks for the reply Captain Havoc. Do most of my MTB'ing around Mt Leinster but I work in KK. Looking for a way to squeeze in more time on the bike - e.g. an hour or two before work, or even a quick blast at lunchtime. Maybe you could PM me your mobile and I'll give you a buzz for a chat?

HERE is an idea of a handy 'XC Style' loop around Kilkenny byt the river, you can pop in and out at a fe differant places. Its not going to set the world on fire but its what you make of it.

Thanks Adrian, that's looks great, will definitely explore that.

Went out for a quick hour before work this morning. Did both sides of the river, down and back the southside first, then down the north side till I met the Sion Road. Found it a great alternative to an hour on the road!

Thanks again for the info. If you ever find yourself around Mt Leinster give is a shout at http://racing795.com and we'll point you in the right direction.

No worries man, as I said it's not much but sure its better than nothing if your in KK and have some time to kill.

Hey, only seen this thread recently did ye find any decent trails? Castle morris wood is not too band or the mass rock woods up near grangemockler, but ye'd need a car to get there, about 15 mins. Heading for the mountain bike challenge near lough derg this weekend, from Callan, should be fun..
