Is there any threads currently on this, here or another forum?
I am going to New York soon and wondering if anyone knows the deal with sales tax etc. Are we exempt from these taxes? If so how do I go about this at point of sale?

Your not tax exempt for clothes, hotels or food in new york. Sorry. However there are certain days of year when tax is removed from clothes. Though not sure when this is.

If you're thinking engagement ring, then I'll move this thread to Weddings & Marriage (where they know this topic to death). Just let me know if you want it moved.

Sales tax varies between states. NY is around 6.5% I think? . Some States are tax free....I think New Hampshire is one. Google should tell you how much the tax is.

Some stores (such as macy's) operate a tax free syatem - you'll need to go to information desk with passport & airline ticket and you'll get a "visitor" card.

On clothing & footwear items under $110, New York is tax free anyway. On Jewellry, you may need to get a tax refund slip and post it off (similar to way tax free for tourists works here)

With the dollar at $1.38 there's some value to be had at present.

tax free week is usually in july/august depending on when public schools start the new year; and its only for shoes, clothing and office supplies under $50 (€36.50) each

jewelry, even under $50 will never be exempt of taxes
    sorry :(

No taxes are paid in New Jersey as far as I know. 6.5% sales tax in NY / manhattan sounds about right for jewellery. sales tax varies for different goods.

if you're looking at engagement rings in NY, go to Hanikens in diamond district and "Oirish" it up a bit. We got my ring there last year and thought they were brilliant and great value - half the price of what you'd pay here
