I needed to reinstall Vista on a laptop and ended up putting it in a partition and now I have Vista installed twice. How do I delete the corrupted one?

    Thanks

It usually puts the fines in a .old folder. You can just delete them.

If you are getting a choice of two OSes you can get rid of one by right clicking on my computer going to properties > advanced system settings > Advanced tab > startup and recovery.

Boot from the CD and choose to repair, then command prompt.
Type the following command in there "bootrec /rebuildbcd"

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 for more info...

(That's assuming that you've already deleted/formatted the partition it was originally installed on...)

Thanks I will try later as I dont have the CD with me at the moment. Fingures crossed. I have it working properly and reduced the time the boot menu displays the OS options to 2 seconds so it is not really a problem, however I would like to get it right.
Is it a big issue if I just leave the two OS on the laptop?

Just untick the "time to display options" box and it will just book to default, you won't see the option to choose from two any more.

    OP:

    Do you have:
    • 2 partitions on your computer, with each one home to an installation of Vista, or
    • 1 partition, with a currently-working installation of Vista and the remnants of an old install?

(If you're not sure, best bet is to bring up the Computer Management interface - Start > Run > compmgmt.msc, remembering to right-click and select "Run as administrator" if you've got UAC on. Go to Storage > Disk Management and check your disk and partition configuration.)

If you have 2 partitions, you need to identify which one you're currently using, then delete the other partition. Once you've freed up that space, you can expand your working partition to make use of the extra space, or you can create a second data-storage partition.

If you've only got 1 partition, go to your system drive (usually C:) and just delete Windows.old (after making sure you've recovered all your files from the old install).

    Thanks,

I have not got the laptop with me but the drive is particioned into C: and D:. The working OS in in C. If I delete D: from the My Computer screen will the second (original) OS (corrupted one) be deleted and the laptop work with the one I have installed and set as default? Will I lose all drivers etc if the original drivers were in D:?
I have it working perfectly with the new installed OS but would rather delete the original OS that was corrupt.

Please don't tell people to format drives unless you are quite sure they realise that everything on drive D: will be gone forever

I've lost a lot of hours recently because of a dodgy USB port , windows offered the user the option to format an external drive and the user clicked OK
