I want to do a print for my aunt's birthday. This is the house she and my mam grew up in.

Have to use this shot taken a few years ago as there have been some changes to the house since.

I want to make the image look like a painting - is this possible.

However I have Silver FX pro on my Elements program and got this effect which I kinda like too.

forget the filters and try getting it printed unto canvas and see if it looks better.

You could trace the image in Illustrator. There is a Live Trace option with a few presets that'll do that more or less. Tho you may be better off hand tracing to get those sleek lines.

Here is a quick example using the OP's image:
    attachment.php?attachmentid=130780&stc=1&d=1286920237

The movie of A Scanner Darkly was process in Illustrator for example.

EDIT: And here is a train:

    attachment.php?attachmentid=130782&stc=1&d=1286920711
On the left is the original and on the right is the traced vector image.
Once you have the vector image you can pretty much do what ever you want to it.
