Hi.I inadvertenlty put in the incorrect amount when claiming a tax refund on health expenses and recieved well in excess of what I was entitled to. I rang offering to pay the money back and they told me to write out a cheque for the amount payable to the collector general and post it to them at their Fingal office.I am wary of doing this, as I would rather pay this back in person and I was wondering if anybody can tell me where I should go to do this.I live in the fingal area. Or is it ok to write a cheque and send it off?

Write a cheque payable to the collector General and cross the cheque, so it can only go into the CGs account.
Keep a record of the payment just in case of a future audit - I think they advise you to hold on to receipts for 5 years, so just keep details of the payment with your receipts.

I honestly don't know anything much about this, but kudos to you for admitting to it and wanting to pay it back, many would try to let it slide. This country needs more honest folk like you.

If you can go into the office itself and write a cheque in front of them, and get some form of receipt? Like I said I know nothing about this area so I'm not sure if this is possible, but I personally would prefer to hand over a cheque to a person and get some form of receipt, preferably with a stamp.

my advice would be to file an amended claim and when you received the amended assessment (showing your underpayment) send a cheque in payment to the collector general

I once was went two cheques for the same amount on a tax rebate in the 80s. (approx 400 euros) I was in a cold flat and half starved and under weight still sent the cheque back.

When I called in the tax office to arrange the rebate originally they said "you can have a house wamer" I said the only house walmer I will be having is buying a cylinder of gas. I think they sent me the second one as they felt sorry for me when I look back on it.

My advice is buy prize bonds with the extra money. (the govt will still use the money)If they come looking for the $ give it back by cashing it in. You wont have spent it.

The country has been (and is being and will be) raped by bankers and politicians for billions and you are worried by a few 100? Im sorry I didnt keep that second cheque back then. I really needed it.

Then again, if you dont need it send it back ............ make up your own mind.

I await all the ................. oh if everyone thought like you threads .....

write the cheque. take a photocopy before you send it.
Keep an eye out for when it was cashed, and make sure you receive a receipt because here is where the fun starts..
Social welfare will have no record of the payment.
This is why it's important to get AND KEEP your receipt.

This is awful advise. The medical tax relief is done on a trust basis. They don't even ask you to submit receipts, but they do ask you to keep them for a number of years. If you get picked out of the hat for an audit you will end up paying interest and penalties.

If anyone wants to defraud the state for a few hundred euro, a fraudulent claim for medical expenses relief is pretty simple, but it is tax evasion and they'll screw you if they catch you.
