A HD test transmission is showing at the moment on RTE HD channel.
Mostly shot in Dublin from what I've seen so far

anyone else get breakup on the HD test? All other channels are fine, just whenever they show the HD test videos I get it. Might be my setup - using a Nova-T USB on the back of a DM800

That doesn't sound like a reliable solution.

your probably right there watty, but in fairness, it is has been rock solid stable for a long time now on all other channels....just seems to be an issue with the HD test transmissions coming over DTT.

Guess it could easily be a driver issue, not able to handle the HD stream correctly.

The main channels will be migrating to HD only. HD needs x4 to x 6 the resources to run codec as non-HD

It could well be the PC isn't fast enough. My older laptop works fine for most stations but struggles with HD. A good clue comes from the scrolling banner on the news channel. If it jerks or stutters it means trouble.

Its a DM800 set top box he is using which can handle HD just fine from the internal satellite tuner. Its likely the USB interface cant handle the data stream. Interesting to see if other countries like France or Italy with similar DVB-T HD setups work on these USB tuners in the linux set top boxes.

The VU+ Duo will also eventually have this third tuner via USB sorted and if it works well for Saorview it would make the VU+ Duo a very good value box indeed.

Im not too sure about the internal technicalities. All i know is that a USB tuner on my old laptop struggles with HD but is fine on my main PC.

Not enough CPU to run the MPEG4 Codec in HD on laptop. Needs x5 CPU as SD.

The Dreambox issue more likely a limit of the bitrate on USB or Dongle as USB isn't very fast. Some USB dongles or host ports might be USB 1.x rather than USB 2.0 so limited to under 12Mbps (OK for SD even in MPEG2).
