rabblerabble London far greater transport than dublin rabblerabble!

Nah, not wanting to spark off a debate, just wanna ask, does anyone have the online account with the Oyster card? I have the card, want to do this to top it up before I head over Thursday. Problem is they require a postcode (e.g. SW1H 5TL or SW7 2NJ).

Does anybody know what to do in this situation?

When you land just top the card up at the first tube station that you come to. You should be able to do it at the airport as well; you can do it in Heathrow.

The TfL desk in Heathrow accepts plastic which may help you out....

    = Downing Street.

"The postcode of the Royal Mail offices at Tomb Street in Belfast is BT1 1AA." - this is the default UK postcode for Ireland.

All you need to do is remember the postcode. AFAIK, you can use any postcode you want.

As do the machines in the tube stations.

You don't need to register it to top it up via credit card as you can top it up at any ticket machine on the Underground using your card.

Incidentally some handy features on the ticket machines in the Tube stations is that you can check your balance at any stage, and also check your usage.

Follow the link to TfL's map of what services you can use Oyster on.

Yes, according to https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/oyster/using-oyster/where-you-can-use-oyster — "All services in Zones 1-9 and to Watford Junction and Shenfield."

Very nice map of stations in the Watford area on Wikipedia: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/71/Watford_railways.png

Worth mentioning for anyone else living up North...

If you have a contactless debit or credit card with UK bank account put can use that instead and pay the same rates as oyster. Would have saved me a few bob on my last trip to London as I put more on my oyster than I eventually needed...

Some contactless cards from outside the UK can also be used according to the tfl website.

My friend used her AIB visa debit card to do this in London with no problems. She was about to buy an oyster card but the guy behind the desk pointed to the contactless logo on her visa debit and told her to just use that.

Are you on an Oyster or an Oyster Visitor? In any case just top up the Oyster Card using a Debit card etc at the first station you go to.

You can use a contactless Visa Debit but last time I checked there were problems with card clash... ie: first journey happened to tag on/off with the Oyster and the second journey tagged with the Visa Debit so they didn't fare cap.

That's because you swiped your wallet or purse, you need to take the card out to avoid card clash.

As other posters have discussed registration, I'd encourage anyone with an Oyster card to register it but you can't register the visitor Oyster card that you can buy online, only the ones that you get in London from a machine or ticket office.

The benefit of registration is that if your card is lost or stolen, you buy another one with the minimum credit which I think is £5, then you phone the TfL helpdesk who will move the credit from the lost card to your new one, it's done overnight so I had my credit returned by 8 a.m. the next day when I lost a card with £20 credit on it last year.

You can use any old postcode, they're never going to write to you so it doesn't matter. Find an off-licence or furniture shop in NI and there's your address and postcode.

If you are using a non-UK bank account, be very careful doing this as the transaction charges may be huge.

I believe all the day's trips are put through in one transaction to your account at day end, so only one charge.

Even still, it's a foreign currency transaction if your card was issued by an Irish bank and sometimes there's a minimum charge which for something as trivial as a couple of hops on the tube could be relatively expensive. I'm sticking to the Oyster card.
