Google Mobile app - no push notifications

The Google Mobile app can give you push notifications when you get a new mail - dead handy, and prevents me having to go out any pay for an app to do that. Or so you'd think! Since installing, it hasn't sent me one push notification. I've verified the settings, I've killed and restarted the app, and the phone, and still…

Works for me, but it's not as fast as having gmail setup through Microsoft exchange server in settings, that's instantaneous
