I noticed the first fall of acorns this week and thought it was a good time to go through the steps for planting acorns.
Acorns generally fall in early October and it is best to sow them as soon as possible after collection The good acorns for sowing can be separated from the bad or unusable acorns by placing into a bucket of water, those that sink are good – the floaters should be disgarded. Sowing acorns– plant the acorns to a depth of 5 -10cm in a small/mid sized pot. The acorn will normally generate a small root over the winter but no above soil growth will apear until springtime. Keep the pot moist but away from frost until spring. Mice seem to be able to sense acorns at 100 paces so if you have mice arround watch out. Go on - give it a go !

Also if you live in an exposed area you can get a better strike rate on the saplings by bunging the acorns into the fridge for a month or two before following above advice.
