Installing Parallels on a Mac with Bootcamp on it

    So title says it all.

I have my mac partitioned between Snow Leopard and Windows NT via bootcamp.

I want to now put parallels on it since I need to use windows alot more now.

Is parallels smart enough to recognise bootcamp and windows on my hard drive and install around it, or do I have to do a completely fresh install ?

Yeah, Parallels can use the Bootcamp partition. It'll just have to install some tools on it so it can work properly.

Yeah thanks Prof. I stopped wondering and just bought it and it installed no bother. Runs like a dream. Awesome. So much better than bootcamp!

Parallels 6 is a slick piece of software alright, I haven't run into any problems with it and I've been using it quite a bit. I still need to use Bootcamp though for anything graphics card intensive, like watching streams that are IE only or Sopcast as Paralells can struggle a bit with it.

Its just....like.....how!!!!???????? How on earth do they do this ? Its like voodoo or seomthing. Its like I have two computers in one. And if I run Amiga Forever on Win XP through parallels on my mac.........:eek::eek::eek:

Its like - is anything even real anymore ?!?!?!?!?!!?!? Its all very disconcerting. Maybe we are all a simulation on a mac ? Is this a game of Sim City ?????:confused::confused:

I'm sure Parallels would LOVE to use you for a consumer testimonial on their website! :P

The only issue I have come across is with windows 7. Installed via Bootcamp, when I hooked up Parallels to it then it worked fine, except it said it was an unlicensed copy, when in fact it is legit.

Haven't figured out how to resolve yet. Not a biggie as I rarely use the windows partition.

Similar thing happened to me, Hobbes. Actually, it would show up as legit in Parallels, but as unlicensed when I booted into it via Bootcamp.

Make sure Parallels Tools is installed, and do the phone activation (it's all automated). That solved it for me!

Does the firewire port work on it? Can you see it?

I never use it so i don't know. Just checked the devices menu and I don't seee any firwire port there.

But on a related question can someone answer this for me. I have tried to link up a black macbook to my macbookpro via a firewire cable. I think I hav ethe right cables (i.e. it plugs into both) but I cannot get the black one to show up on the macbookpro as a disk drive as its supposed to do. It just doesn't seem to recognise it. Any ideas anyone ?

Is the Blackbook going into Target Disk Mode successfully?

Are you sure it's the right cable? The recent Macbook Pros have a Firewire 800 port. The Blackbook would have a Firewire 400 port. So you would need a 6-pin to 9-pin cable.

No I guess its not goinginto target disk mode properly. Its a while since I've tried it. I'm pretty sure it is a 6 to 9 pin cable

If it fits it probably is the right cable.

Re: target disk mode, have a look here:

Is the Firewire symbol appearing on the Blackbook?

If you want to transfer files turn on sharing under system prefs. Then you can connect to the other laptop using finder and move your files over the network.....best to use ethernet obv.
