Golf MK5 options

I'm currently in possession of an '06 1.4L Golf MK5 (manual, sport model), and am exploring different performance options (not looks, it's just not my thing).

I've been looking into quite a few possibilities but the main one is regarding sticking in a more powerful engine in place of the existing 1.4L engine.

Anyone know of approximate costs/difficulties involved? I know that simply buying another Golf is easier, but I'm wondering about the engine swap job, and all the other essential modifications that go with it.

Aswell as the new engine, you;ll also need to upgrade your brakes to discs all round,better/ stiffer suspension setup, upgrade your clutch, need new drives aswell as probably a new ecu unit, upgrade to a 6 speed box, and theres prob a bit more that I cant think of at the moment that will need replacing. On top of all that theres labour costs, unless you are capable and willing to do it by yourself.

TBH it would be cheaper and easier to just sell the current Golf and buy an older GTi, it would definalty be the more sensible option.

It's complete madness imo, sell your current golf and buy a 1.8T Gti if that's what you're after.

I was figuring something like a 1.8T may be a bit unfeasable to swap in - would, for example, a 1.6 FSI engine be less of a hassle to chuck in?

Why would ya even bother tbh, just buy a more powerful car

Testtransmition is right, for the power gains, it would be madness spending that much money on so little of a difference

If you really want to do this source a 2.0 TFSI engine from an ED30 GTI, make sure its comes with the K04 turbo, ECU etc... with an uprated intercooler, fuel pump, full sports exhaust system you can remap this baby well upwards of 300 bhp.... You will of course also need to uprate your suspension and brakes and a few other things...

In all reality though you would be much better sourcing an actual GTI...

On a side note if that is the 1.4 TSI engine you have I think it pumps out 168bhp as standard, with an remap from APR you can take this to around 200 bhp.

As the others have said, you will be wasting your money. You would be MUCH better off buying a GTi

Would cost a fortune and could cause all sorts of problems. Complete madness. Nothing at all you can do to improve the performance of a 1.4 NA golf.
