If you had €40k to spend on a 2006/2007 sports saloon, which would you buy?

I'd buy one of the last Jaguar S-type R's to be honest.

The E60 M5 was basically a computer and the E63 AMG just plain dull.

But the S-type is the ugliest Jag of all time!
I'd nearly go for the Merc simply because of the default choice being the M5, and I like to be different sometimes!
In reality though I think I'd go for a €3k saloon somewhere and a 997 that can almost be found now for 40k!

Strangely enough, I beg to differ:

Early S-Types were poorly finished but much like everything that went before it, the last models were well sorted

Where can you pick up a 997 for €40k?

Whatever about the S type what about the XJR? An amazing car tbh, I have a 4litre XJ6 and that doesn't hang around but the XJR is a flyer and a lovely car to drive. But of the two you mention i'd pick the M5 the Merc is an ould fellas car.

Not a saloon, but 2 grand for an MX-5 would sort me out nicely.

Some user on here has a lovely black Maserati Quattroporte & I really like it. It would be a really nice choice given it's exclusivity, plus any Maserati I've ever heard sounded awesome. The only thing I would be afraid of would be reliability.

I borrowed a 2006 e60 M5 2 years ago for a day & I have to say it was unbelieveable, not the prettiest car to be fair but boy did it go like stink.

I think if you actually got a drive in one there is no way you could vote for anything else. The way the seat bolsters physically move as you go around corners or overtake, the head up display right in your eye line, the noise of the V10 & the unbelieveable stopping power of the brakes. What an awesome car.

I drove a 1999 E55 & it was good but not the same (OK I know it is unfair comparing an older car), it was quick but it didn't feel sporty at all when you were hammering it on where the M5 did.

    Just my (limited) 2 cents.

If the Maserati was an option I'd chose that, but I'm a big Mercedes fan so it would have to be an E63 for me!

Mercedes! The E60 is very ugly looking thing and there are too many of them on the road.

Of the two offered, the Merc. Sadly the BMW no longer has any prestige attached to it imho. I have never owned or driven either so this is a choice from perception, and my perception of a BMW is "chav's car", while Merc is Elitist's car.

Just a POV, obviously, and not intended to offend.......

I haven't driven either, but I have been a passenger in the older e39 M5 around Mondello.

I drive a 2001 BMW 525M, and have driven one friends 2003 Mercedes E320 and another friends 2006 BMW 525M. Using these as a comparison, I'd have to go with the BMW. I found the Mercedes a bit like a boat, and found the driving position cramped. I felt a lot more in control in each of the BMWs.

If I went for the Maserati, it would have to be black (like the one in Life!). I think that in silver it is horrendous looking (even worse than a standard e60!!).

TBH, they're both a bit chavvy compared to a debadged E500 in a discreet colour. Or an E28 M5 for that matter. If we could have AMG get rid of the quad exhausts, front bumper, smoked glass and badging on the car Seweryn posted, though, then i'd go for that.

While I agree that the early S-types in basic trim were a bit dowdy looking, I actually think a sportier S-type in a dark colour like that looks quite elegant.

My idea of a BMW M5 is this:

    fs_0045140001233607831.jpg

^^Pure understatement, right down to the 'turbine' wheels that were designed to provide sufficient cooling for the brakes.

I don't care how much of a revelation people say the E60 was. As a car it totally lost the point of the M5 and had an interior that was as cold and clinical as a dental surgery.

All top end BMWs are machine-like efficient but brutal, the e60 is just the posterchild for this generation. They do what they do well, the M5 is the best choice of the two for the presumed function. One could make the argument the E34 M5 linked looks more "different" to the regular E34 because of the trim and wheels, its less of an understatement than the MSport bodied e60 M5 as 60% of E60s have virtually the same body kit. The E60 is therefore "understated".

All this talk of perception and prettyness is for the 520d brigade, the M5 is a focused super saloon. It doesnt need an excuse or a backstory or charm.

Of the 2 options given I voted M5. If you were talking new I'd have said the AMG. As for €40k, I'd put my money into the maserati or else an xjr (in black with 20" split rim wheels)

I have driven e60 M5's for hours and hours. They are savage machines. Very comfortable, high tech, sound great. However they are not that fast off the line or up to about 80kph. After that the thing explodes its so fast. I also like all the settings, it make the car interesting. The looks are fantastic, the wide stance and the quads.....

I have sat in the passenger seat of a e63 amg being driven in anger. Its fast for sure, more comfort focused a point an squirt muscle car. Softer, older.

For me the M5......its a 507bhp 4 door Ferrari for 30k with barley broken in milage.
