Hello, I am just wondering could anybody fill me in on what the food is like in the various canteens around the campus - including pugin hall.

Also how much do dinners cost in pugin hall on a daily basis, along with things such as deserts / tea etc.

    Thank you.

I've only eaten in pugin hall twice, but both time the dinners were amazing. And for 7 quid, couldn't go wrong.

I wouldn't chance the soup. Once, it was like liquid heaven mixed with happiness, the second time, I actually felt bad for the bowl it was in.

But, I would highly HIGHLY recommend bringing in a sambo or 2 from home. There is nothing better then the sense of saving 50 quid a week, just for eating

You could eat in the canteen and...

    Oh yeah.

3 of us went to Pugin hall on Thursday and had: 2 bowls of soup (which was amazing) two plates of chips, an egg salad sandwich and a piece of pizza bread stuff and it was all 11 euro! Lovely food and so cheap.
The chips in the SU are also yummy they're like chipper chips and a plate of them is 2.50. SU also does good breakfast rolls for around 3.50.

I see what you did there....

The Canteen is finally under reconstruction after the unplanned demolition and it will feature 2 new café areas, a new canteen area and less food poisoning.

I've been onto other campus's and I must say that NUIM is a tad on the overpriced side. and its not helped by the likes of the O'Brien's in JH.

O'Briens is a rip off and the staff from my experience are really unfriendly.

Much appreciated (and interesting prices), but isn't there anything a bit more along the lines of meat/ veg/ potato dinners. I do not want to be living off of pizza and chips, and if that is the sort of food that is served there well I wouldn't eat there to be honest.

Are there average meals been served on a daily basis, or does it consist primarily of high fat foods?

    Thank you for your help.

Rip off, yes, but I have to say, the people at the o'briens stand in the library are always great to deal with

They have a kind of carvery set up. When I went there I had a proper full dinner, ham, mash, veg, gravy, and it was delicious

Tbh a pizza / chips versus a carvery with two types of meat, stuffing, gravy, mashed and roast potatoes, cabbage and carrots is a pretty even comparison.

If you really want something cheap and low fat there's a salad bar in dunnes as well as a cold rolls/sandwich counter.

Haha, I have this image of some culchie emerging from under his mother's shawl for the first time :D Meat and two veg dinners, which Pugin do serve are just as bad for you as anything else they may serve. It's decent tasting food made with the cheapest ingredients they can find. The mash is loaded with salt and butter (delicious but hardly healthy), the veg is always overcooked so all the nutrients are long gone and the meat is obviously not the greatest health wise. In summation, it's mostly delicious but if you want healthy food you don't eat in a canteen!!

Vegetables don't lose anything by being cooked, that's a myth :)

Anyway, speaking of Pugin hall, does anyone know where you can find out what they serve? Do you have to go there or is it online somewhere? Anyone got any clue what's served tomorrow? :)

    No, it's not.

They lose nearly all of their vitamin C when cooked, the defense vitamin, and also lose large amounts of beta carotene (Vitamin A) and others like Vitamin B6 are highly unstable to heat and/or water. Especially when they are overcooked to fook like they are in Pugin.

    Just saying.

I knew that A2 in Home Ec would come in useful eventually!:)
