Anyone out there good at mechanics ? I drive a 207 k mile 1992 km35 toyota Liteace. There is a loud whirring, humming noise coming from the back end of this van.It gets louder with speed and is there even when coasting. I reckon its the bearings where the wheel joins the axle.I pulled the brake drum off and took off the shoes and adjuster gear. I removed the 4 14 mm bolts that hold the backing plate to the axle via a kind of retaining bracket but could find no way of removing the axle. There is a half a mil of play but no leaks.I can find no help or manuals to down load on the net after hours of looking. It probably has a similar setup to a lot of r.w.d. jap machines.Any ideas anyone ?

Have you looked at the Diff?. That can generate a good howling sound as it fails.

Im hoping its not the diff because that will be a total pain to get re-built and expensive. The diffs. are good for well over 500k miles as a rule..The first thing I checked when I got this van was the diff.It had plenty of gear oil so I was assuming it had been maintained properly. The bearings have a little play in them and I thought they would be easy to investigate so I'm checking them out first.Any ideas on pulling the axles out ?

OP You might get a better response if you post in the Motoring forum:

    Rec> Motoring > Motors

Some very knowledgeable types in there

Very hard to help you without knowing the vehicle itself. Id say youd get better advice in the motoring section. Any photos? Might help a bit to see whats going on there.

is a Liteace rear wheel drive? if not its very very unlikely to be a diff problem!!!
probably a bearing i would say.

its rearwheel drive, if you remove the brake drum and the 4 14mm retaining bolts you can use a slide hammer to pull the halfshaft out of the axle casing. alternatively, put on an old steel rim and whack it with a big sledgehammer to remove the shaft. id say its the halfshaft bearing thats gone, a fairly common problem on the liteace. if you dont know what you're doing, you're probably better off bringing it to a mechanic.

I'll be bringing the shafts into a heavy plant workshop to get the bearings replaced. Thanks for the removal tips.
