    Do you have a VAT number, and will it be used solely for commercial purposes.

    If the answer to either of those is no, say hello to €471 a year road tax.

    How are you supposed to get around this if you are a sole trader who isn't VAT registered? I'm sure there are plenty of them out there.

    I don't think you will get around it, it seems that you have to now provide your VAT no. There was a thread about all this on the motors forum.

    There is a huge long thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056002732

    There are several ways of proving a business other than a VAT number.

    Are you trying to say, that a small business that doesn't need to register for VAT is forced to tax it's van privately.
    That doesn't make sense.

    No, if you check the long running commercial thread as mentioned above you will find the full list of requirements on the last page, there are several other possibilities besides VAT.

    Its the case in the UK where the tax groupr would be PLG PRIVATE? LIGHT GOODS same as cars. (afaik)

    From what I've heard though, the staff in the tax office are only looking for VAT numbers. It's probably possible to prove it another way, but I don't think it will be easy.

    @CiniO - you're right on the tax rate - I read across the line for 1.7 :o

    We tried to tax a new Astra SportHatch van privately, as the CO2 emissions are listed on the RF100 (commercials usually state 999g/km or N/A), but the feckers rejected it, based on emissions. Can be taxed privatley, but based on engine size, so 471 for a 1.7 instead of 156 for emissions of 137g/km :mad:

    Yep, no need for two threads.

    Thread closed.
