Dublin Outsiders in club championship

What influence do people think outsiders from Dublin have on the club football championship? Negative because some native Dubs don't get a chance to play, or positive because the overall standard of football is better and prepares players more for that step up to intercounty?

Kilmacud have Morrissey and Kavanagh in flying form and Parnells have the 4 Laois boys (which didn't do much good). How many non-dubs are there actually in the championship and which team has the most? Obviously UCD would but they don't really count.

This topic is always brought up and it doesn't make as much difference as everyone says. When Crokes won the All-Ireland in 2009, they had a panel of 34 and 3 of those were blow-ins, the rest were local lads. If you go to most decent sized towns around the country, they are going to have a few outsiders as well. I don't think that it has much of a bearing on the quality of the championship, because how many of the blow-ins would actually make the Dublin team.

Fair point about only 2-3 players but Brian Kavanagh and Adrian Morrisey were a nice two to have!! In a lot of clubs around the country, they would be the best two footballers if they had them, so you can see what difference it makes getting them as additions. The rest of the Kilmacud team though is very strong. Easier count the number of guys without county experience on it than to count those with it!

Crokes prob have the best underage set up in Dublin and possibly the country.Kevin Nolan,Cian O'Sullivan and the Carroll brothers are some of Crokes and Dublin promising young players, having said that if Crokes didnt have Brian Kavanagh or Adrian Morrisey they wouldnt have won All Ireland Club 2 years, same when Vincents won Club All Ireland 3 years. They had Micheal OSe from Kerry,Brian Maloney,Pat Kelly(Mayo)Hugh Coghlan(Tipperary).Plunkets have Anthony Moyles(Meath),Conor Evans(Offaly),Michael Brides(Cavan),David Sweeney(Laois),Slyvesters have Shane Roche,Diarmuid Kinsella(Wexford),Darren Clarke,Jamie Carr(Louth),Ray Cullivan(Cavan),Parnells have 4 Laois players.Clubs seem more interested in signing outsiders rather developing young players which will effect dublin football in the future.I dont have anything against outsiders playing in Dublin but what annoys of the players I mentioned above playing club football the majority of them are still playing with their county.Surely if a players travels home to go training/playing with country then surely that can play for club

Plunketts got in a lot of players from outside Dublin over the years and also got Sherlock but it did them no good. They consistently fail at the later stages of the championship.

Parnells have done the same with the Laois fellas and as you say it did them no good in the end.

Clubs obviously will have rural players as they work in Dublin. I play junior level and we would have maybe 3 lads from outside Dublin who joined the club to play.

Its the clubs that actively pursue outsiders and waste money on this is what annoys me most. Clubs should invest in their infrastructure and community and not some pie in the sky dream of winning a championship.

Crokes is the largest club in Dublin in terms of land for pitches and number of members so they are clearly a very well run club and will attract people including lads from outside Dublin. They have put a lot of time and money into building up their club. They also have the distinct advantage of a massive catchment area.

Crokes underage set up is top class alright.

But I don't thinks its a coincidence that all those young players you mentioned are defenders. Having Kavanagh and Morrissey in the team makes it much harder for the young forwards to make the breakthrough. Barry O'Rorke was probably rated higher than any of the lads mentioned as a youngster, but IMO his development has been stunted by a lack of first team action. He's a guy who played Dublin U21 when he was a minor, but 3 years later he could rarely get into the team. In my opinion he would have been first or second choice forward in the Dublin U21 team this year (rather than somehwere between 6th and 9th) if Morrissey or Kavanagh werent at Crokes. On the other side of the coin, I have no idea what M and K put back into the club and whether O'Rorke or others have learned from them.

Now I still think Barry will come through, because he has the quality, and he's been breaking into the Kilmacud team a bit more often recently

have to agree rooster,Barry O'Rourke is top player, had 3 years on dublin minors and 3 years with 21s.He is a prime example of a young player been affected with clubs bringing in "outsiders".Mark Coughlan also of Crokes was nearly man of the match in All Ireland 21 final for Dublin against Donegal didnt even come on as sub in county final.Brendan Phelan played with Crokes a couple years ago was promising young player played minor and 21 for Dublin, doesnt even play club football anymore due to frustration of not getting any game time. Also there is mentality in Dublin where players transfer to bigger clubs to win medal or to get noticed by Dublin management.Players should earn the right to play senior by trying win intermediate/junior medal rather than transferring to a so called bigger club.

Outsiders enhance any team but there should be a limit, some clubs seem to be scouting in order to attract big nmae players with "perks". Local talent which has been with clubs from juvenile level is being discarded in favor of imports. Success is the buzz word i suppose.
