The country is being sold off, should we take it back and how?
This article is real, and scary if you think about it, we're being sold into slavery, forever.........................
After a while, I wondered why she hadn't asked me anything about the Government, or the prospect of an election or what new political constellation might emerge here. She joked and in an exaggerated German accent laughed: "David, it doesn't matter who your next prime minister is, he will have no power -- we own you now, and he will do what we tell him."
The problem is that the joke is on us. She touched on the nub of the issue: the Irish elite is prepared to sell the sovereignty of this country to protect the likes of Roman Abramovich and other vulture investors who bought up third-rate Irish banking debt at a discount and are hoping to get paid in full.

As sad as it is this is exactly whats happening.
Our gov. is selling us down the swanny to protect the few.

Whats even more sad is that the vast majority of irish people are ignorant or just turn a blind eye to the action of our "betters".
Im sure this will be born out by the smart and witty posts that will soon follow.

FF, the republican party!! always makes me laugh!! Haughey lived in a mansion worth 25million, used to fly to paris on the gov. jet to buy expensive silk shorts and owned his own island! now thats a true republican!

Just remember folks, when the IMF arrive, who destroyed this country and not for the first time either? Yes, you guessed right!

    Fianna Fail

Its been heading this way for a while. I gave up hope once guinness was sold off to diageo, so now one of our most well known symbols is now english.

and they wonder why so many people are fleeing the country,

God I hate David McWilliams. I remember seeing someone's signature here a while back with a quote from him after the bailout, lauding the action to the highest heavens. And now that opinion has turned against it, he's styling himself as a long time and arch critic. The man has no clear principles of his own, and rather tailors everything he says to fit with popular perception. He's not an economic commentator, rather someone who says what he thinks people want to hear. And people lap it up.

Agreed. From the Bertie Ahern school of popularism. Feed the people the shíte they want to hear. Has about as much gravitas as Bill Cullen.

Morgan Kelly has been publishing succinct, insightful posts on the whole clusterfúck that is the Irish economy for the past few years. He might need to up his media profile and get a column in one of the newspapers.

Yet 1 in 4 of our electorate would vote for them in the morning:rolleyes:
Things will have to get to Germany 1930's great depression levels before most people get up off their asses in this country.

All countries sell bonds to other countries. The main purchaser of this country is us, the taxpayers.

Another sensationalist thread by someone who doesn't understand what is actually happening in AH, surprise surprise

You really think that Germany is going to show up and plant their flag here in a few months going "Wir besitzen Sie!"?

I heard they're trying to sell the GPO to the Japanese. Word is they're going to use it to store all the tamagotchi they have leftover from 1996

If they neglect the GPO, all the tamagotchi will die. It'll be a tamagotchicaust.

What's worse is we'll only be able to sell the good bits and we'll be left with the dregs.

At the very least we'd have a decent motorway and transport system.

Yeah, we should take it back.

Now, does anyone remember where we bought it?
