I think currently you will do just as well buying privately. Auction prices can be very high now due to large numbers of private people turning up at the sale and basically paying over the odds typically because they dont know how they work and wouldnt be wise to the various tricks going on.
Merlin in kildare is pretty big.
You would need to know cars well to consider buying at auction and buying on your first visit would be madness. One good point about the auction is that you are guaranteed that you are at least taking proper ownership of the car. Compare this to private sales and nowadays there is a large number of cars being sold with finance still owing etc.
Where ever you buy, get a history check done at least and hve the car checked by someone in the know as with a private sale or auction, you cannot go back crying about some fault you didnt spot before handing over the cash.

Recently tried selling my car at an auction and had people offering me ridiculously low prices, in contrast to mickdw's information i'd say an auction is a good place to pick up a cheap car.

one thing about buying at auction as against buying privately is that you are getting good TITLE to the vehicle ,
I've bought many cars at auction both here and in the uk and its much better peace of mind as regards finance still owing or a yoke being stolen or sold without the owners consent. You have comeback in this regard.

It also cut s out timewasters because the cars are there to be sold unlike some private sales where a fella thinks his car is great and worth a fortune, and is highly insulted when you make an offer and he nearly hits you and calls you a timewaster. !

    Try belgardauctions.ie
    wilsons auction
    and Merlincarauctions.ie

belgard have guide prices unlike the others

Do your reseaech and get the car checked by a mechanic.

Irish motor auctions are doing free entries for sellers at the moment, based in waterford, recently put mine up there. They may do similar offers for buyers not sure though. Ask for Eddie

I was out in Merlin motors recently and you will definitely get yourself a bargain. Cars at auction are as cheap as a two dollar ho, no doubt, mo fo.
for instance i remember that a BMW 325ci 2007, went for 17,000! A 2.0T Audi, 08 I think, went for less that 10,000. It's worth going down just to watch how they do it, and get there early to see all the stock.
