Ok so when I turn it on I get the "connect to computer" in a billion difference languages screen, plug it in and I get the "do not disconnect" screen and it says it's charging. But it's not the normal graphics, the battery icon is block and whit instead of green. itunes doesnt recognise it and it makes a weird grinding type nosie every now and then.

This just now started happening. was using it yesterday, pluged it in an hour ago to charge it and it went all weird.

anyone know whats wrong or how to fix it?

Sounds like the hard disk is dead. If you're not squeamish around electronics you can replace it yourself. If you have a 5th gen, this is what you need: link

Look up some youtube videos on the replacement process and see what you think. I doubt it's worth sending it off for repair, you could probably pick one up second-hand for the same money.

    That's a terrible idea.
If the PC formats it, it becomes a 30gb external HDD and nothing else. I let itunes restore it. it's working now, transfering all my music over.
