I need to get a service. It is my first car and first time bringing it in. I think I may need new tyres, would like the brakes and handbrake checked too. Will they just check these and advise what I need or do I need to ask?

Always mention concerns to a garage when you drop your car in, never presume they will do everything.

A good honest mechanic will check everything and give you his best advice , cowboy will just do the usual ie. oil ,filters, sparkplugs,......

Any decent garage will do a complete check on the car when they service it and make a list of anything else the car may need and inform you of whats needed.
As has been mentioned though you should always mention things which you feel need to be looked at.

I do have concerns, however there are probably lots of things I woln't even know about. Plus I'm afraid of getting a "cowboy" who'll tell me I need thousand worth of work when I dont. How do you find a reputable mechanic?

Sort the tyres out yourself. You'd probably get them cheaper yourself than what a garage would charge and you normally dont have an option on what they put on (whatever cheap scrap is in stock usually).

Ask around friends and family who may know a decent place. Stay away from "fastfit/Advance pitstop" places IMO.

    Where are you based?

Wicklow, but work in South Dublin. Only know I need new tyres soon from my ADI. Everything else is just me speculating- I have never driven any other car so I wouldnt know!

All too often people are ripped off and advised to get extra work done that is not needed, and in some cases I'm sure not done but charged for !

It appears OP has little / no knowledge about the requirements and this is like a lamb to the slaughter in some cases unfortunately. Dont assume that bringing you car to a main dealer will result in absolute honesty. Those that say it will are just being naieve ( hope i spelt that word correctly ) or are actual dealers. Thats not to say that they are all bent. Anyway, the best advice has been given in previous post:

You must know somebody in your immediate / extended family who has a level of knowledge in relation to cars / servicing. Talk to them and get advice, and shop around. Ensure you get a service stamp also. I hate to see normal folk getting shafted by service departments. Just out of interest, what is the car, make / mileage / year ?

Yes, well my mam knows a good tyre guy who is cheaper than the garages but is very reliable so i'll go to him for the tyres. The folks cars are new and under warrenty so they have to go to their main dealers still. My friends always have "a friend of a friend" who gives them a good deal! I'm not sure if I should get one of these nixer people though the first time since I wouldn't know if they were not doing it properly.

Edit -plus I wouldnt get a service stamp if they just came to my house would i??

What kind of car is it?

If it doesn't have a service history thus far I wouldnt worry too much about it. But if you do get it done as a nixer keep a receipt for the parts used and ask him to sign service book and put his number in or something

Any particular reason for not using these

Once again I will recommend MKW motors (01)4595266 just off the naas road kingswood exit.

The lads are spot on will do a service and a thorough inspection. They can do tyres tracking and the like in there own workshop.

They will not do anything without advising you, they keep the faulty part to show what was wrong.

Honest thorough and trust worthy. Way above and beyond most of the cowboys out there.

They tend to be cowboy places in my personal opinion. Now I'm not saying that all of them are but definately ones I've heard about.
Things like making mistakes on cars that shouldn't happen (leaving sump bungs loose)
Telling people they need X, Y, Z when they don't need half of what they say.
Also I'd question the quality of service from a place that offers a full service for €99...

Again this is just my personal opinion and I'm not saying everwhere is like that.

Well any place that has the service staff on sales related bonus can only lead to work being recommended that was not needed.

Bosch service centers are now in Ireland,
They have been proved throughout Europe to be the best of the service centers and have to be audited every year to stay in it.
mkw are a bcs center along with about 20 other garages throughout Ireland.

i'd find your representation of fastfit misleading, as they dont offer servicing,
and there owned by bridgestone so how could they be "cowboy"

Well I didnt mean fast-fit, I was only using it as an example of the type of place but I retract it then since I was mistaken. Sorry if I hit a nerve there.
