I have a similar thread in Military due to the subject and a mod there suggested I post here too.

I am trying to compile a list of sites in Dublin city and county where bastions/star-shaped forts or citadels may have been built or were planned to be built. I have identified a number of these but was wondering if there is anybody here who would have knowledge to add.

These were mainly a 17th and 18th century phenomonon.

Can't help with Dublin, but I presume you have been to Charles fort near Kinsale in Cork. that is a very impressive fort.

Are you going to publish your list? because i would be very interested in visiting a few of these. I grew up next to Fort Nelson, one of the Palmerston forts around Portsmouth and i believe there were effectively what the star shaped forts evolved into.

Have you read Fortress Ireland by John Hartnett McEnery?

Philips plan from 1685 has a massive proposed Citadel/Fort to be built east of St. Stephens Green in the area of the Merrion estate (Merrion street/Baggot Street/Fitzwilliam street). I don't have a electronic copy but going on the map published in the "Irish historic towns Atlas no. 19" it looks like it would have been a pentagon style fort with 5 bastions and with Ravelins between each bastion.

De Gomme map from 1673 has a proposal for a pentagonal star-fort as well except in his case it would have completely occupied Ringsend. Which was just a narrow peninsular between the Dodder tidal zone and the sea.

Map gives an idea of how the area was with current map overlaid on it.
