Questions on remapping petrol engine.

    Two main questions please.

    1. Is it worth having a toyota 1.8l VVTi engine remapped? In other words would I notice a performance improvement? Would fuel consumptation change? Anyone had this engine remapped?

    2. If remapping is beneficial as advertised ( particularly for those driving turbo diesels), why don't the manufacturers originally map the engines to this performance? Are there down sides that aren't advertised?

    thanks

No point remapping a low capacity petrol. You might get a few brake but it would be hardly noticable tbh. There may be en economy remap though.

Part of the reason manufacturers dont offer the full power from the engines is to reduce stress on components. Also the emissions might get skewed

Pointless remapping a non turbo engine in general terms.

OP, don't know how much gain you would get from your engine, I'd say the 190hp engine used in the celica has some different internals, not just a software upgrade.

Can I just point out as one of the few exceptions to the "no point remapping small petrol engines" rule, that the 1.6 petrol Mini Ones can be brought from 90hp to 130hp for approx 250euro(?). Almost 50% gain is some exception!

Yeah, it's deliberately mapped to produce less power than the Cooper to get people to buy that engine instead.

A Cooper would probably only be capable of being remapped to 130 bhp as well.

That's purely because the engine in the Mini One (the 90BHP one) is intentionally crippled.
Same could be said of some turbo diesels? Some jap petrol turbos when they leave the factory? Tis hardly a new phenomenon!
