I'm a recent graduate and heading for Perth in the beginning of November.

I have 4 months site experience working with a contractor in the UK(pipelines). Very little I know.

I am looking for work primarily Perth and WA either on site or in design office.

Just wondering does anybody have any relaible information on what the jobs situation is like in this part of Australia at the moment?

Any links to prospective employers/recruiters or any advice at all would be greatly appreciated

Perth (and WA in general) is crying out for engineers at present so you've nothing to worry about. Even though you've very little experience, many of the bigger engineering firms based in Perth (RPS, Worley Parsons, Golder, Knight Piesold) have opportunities for graduates. If you were under pressure to find work straight away there's any number of contractors on the lookout for site engineers. U should also get in touch with Hays Recruitment when u arrive, I'm not sure if they deal with graduates but they do have a lot of contacts in the area so u might be lucky. A word of warning...don't stress too much about chasing up jobs before u arrive - most employers/recruiters won't take any heed of u until you're actually here.

Obviously the mines are another option - the wages are excellent but u would be based in the middle of nowhere on a fly in/fly out basis. That would generally involve working for 3 or more weeks in a row followed by 1 week off. If you're single and willing to work hard then I'd recommend giving it a go, my girlfriend moved over here with me so it wasn't really an option when we arrived.

If you're wondering about areas to live, u should try to stick to the northern suburbs (Subiaco, Leederville, Mount Lawley, Wembley etc.) as this is where most of the nightlife is based. I live in South Perth (on the other side of the river) and it's pretty cool as well. As long as your near a decent bus or train route you'll be grand. This will all make sense to you when u arrive and get to know the area.

    Websites:
www.seek.com.au (your best bet for jobs)
www.gumtree.com.au (for finding a car or a place to live)

Give me a shout if you've any other questions.
